    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/india/7645857/Man-claims-to-have-had-no-food-or-drink-for-70-years.html
Prahlad Jani is being held in isolation in a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gurjarat, where he is being closely monitored by India's defence research organization, who believe he may have a genuine quality which could help save lives.

He has now spent six days without food or water under strict observation and doctors say his body has not yet shown any adverse effects from hunger or dehydration.

Mr Jani, who claims to have left home aged seven and lived as a wandering sadhu or holy man in Rajasthan, is regarded as a 'breatharian' who can live on a 'spiritual life-force' alone. He believes he is sustained by a goddess who pours an 'elixir' through a hole in his palate. His claims have been supported by an Indian doctor who specializes in studies of people who claim supernatural abilities, but he has also been dismissed by others as a "village fraud."

India's Defence Research Development Organisation, whose scientists develop drone aircraft, intercontinental ballistic missiles and new types of bombs. They believe Mr Prahlad could teach them to help soldiers survive longer without food, or disaster victims to hang on until help arrives.
"If his claims are verified, it will be a breakthrough in medical science," said Dr G Ilavazhagan, director of the Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences.

"We will be able to help save human lives during natural disasters, high altitude, sea journeys and other natural and human extremities. We can educate people about the survival techniques in adverse conditions with little food and water or nothing at all."

So far, Mr Prahlad appears to be standing up to scrutiny. He has not eaten or drunk any fluids in six days, and similarly has not passed urine or a stool in that time. He remains fit and healthy and shows no sign of lethargy. Doctors will continue observing him for 15 days in which time they would expect to see some muscle wastage, serious dehydration, weight loss, and fatigue followed by organ failure.

It is common in India for Jains and Hindus to fast, sometimes for up to eight days, without any adverse affects, as part of their religious worship. Most humans cannot survive without food for 50 days. The longest hunger strike recorded is 74 days.

According to Dr Sudhir Shah, who examined him in 2003, he went without food or water for ten days in which urine appeared to be reabsorbed by his body after forming in his bladder. Doubts were expressed about his claim after his weight fell slightly at the end of the trial.

I couldn't go for 70 minutes without a 'hang' sandwich.

What he's claiming is the equivalent of saying you've been driving the same car for the last 10 years without ever filling up the petrol tank. It's not possible, and I'm not sure why 'doctors' would waste their time with this sort of nonsense.

Maybe he was one of this sleeping conditions where he gets up and eats/drinks in his sleep and doesn't know about it!

Well the not drinking or eating after 6 days monitoring is impressive. If you read the article, it's more of a study into the guys methods of starvation and how his body copes.

I think I saw this fella on a channel 4 doc one night, and if it wasn't him it was some indian yogi dude with a similar story

Said he hadn't eaten or drank water in years, that he would meditate and take his nourishment from the sun.
It showed him staring at the sun, then he would start hawcking from the back of his throat saying that it was pure nourishment gifted from the sun.

They put him under observation on a camera for a week in which time he didn't eat but insisted on bathing every day for cleanliness but didn't appear to drink the water.

I dunno what to say about this one, perhaps a racist joke is suitable??

6 days is acceptable, I'm sure it's possible that a person could have an unusually high tolerance to lack of food (and especially water) stretching beyond what is normally considered survivable. No problem with that. It's the alleged claim that he never eats or drinks at any time that I would have a major problem with. That's just not possible. He could still be an interesting case though.

He was on a drip in a military hospital for the past 70 years. He could be telling the truth :P

When he drops dead in a few days from not eating or drinking, that will blow a hole in their mad theory.

All them scientists and doctors monitoring him will look like twats then.

He may be (By some form of an unknown genetic mutation) be photorophic. That could have given him the ability to photosynthesise just like plants and some micro organisms.

It doesn't say that.. unless I'm missing it? It states that he claims to have gone without food or water for 7 decades

"(Jani's) only contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing periodically during the period," G. Ilavazahagan, director of India's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said in a statement.

Yeah 7 decades he says alright.

pile of bollix if you ask me.

If he wanted to prove himself he could'a done without washing his body and mouth for the 15 days.

What the **** does that even mean?

An energy source other than calories???

Calories aren't a source of anything they're a measure of energy, the energy required to raise the temperature of one litre of water by one degree Celsius. who ever said that is not a medical practitioner.

    It's not valid, it's a scam.

During his time in hospital from April 22, the so called 82-year-old "miracle man" was monitored 24 hours a day by doctors who confirmed he consumed no food or water during the 15-day period.

...ffs I'm no medic what have ya.. but you might probably somewhat survive 15 days without food / water.

If he claimed to have been doing it for 70 or so years and will "continue" to do so when he left... why wouldn't they monitor him for a time period that would definately be critical without food / water such as 50 / 60 days...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,918 ✭✭✭✭orourkeda

Imagine having no meanies for 70 years. Rotten
