HTC Hero not recognising sim card

So rooted my phone (Villain 5.4) a few days ago, everything ok.

This evening I randomly lost signal. Came back about 2 mins later. Then went again. Lock screen says no service. Made sure sim card is locked in place properly, even put an extra piece of paper in between sim card and battery to make sure it was contacting properly.

Basically from what I can see airplane mode is constantly on. I try turn it off but it just wont.

Sim card works perfectly fine in another mobile.

Did a Nand Backup to when phone was working, didnt help.

Looks like I'm going to have to re-install stock rom and bring it back to Meteor.

Anybody got any insight / advice by chance? I'm stumped! :o

Sounds like you're experiencing the wonderful HTC Hero/Meteor 2g/3g network connection problem.

I doubt returning your phone to the stock ROM will fix the issue. It happened to me on the unrooted stock ROM and it happens to me on every custom ROM I've used.

It seems whenever the phone is in an area with a weak 3g signal it will disconnect entirely from the network instead of simply going on to the 2g network.

Turning on and off airplane mode is usually the way to fix it, but I've noticed lately that this is taken more then two tries for it to work properly.

Wouldn't bother much with Meteor being able to happen. They've admitted themselves on the meteor HTC forum that they are clueless. I'd still call and complain though-the more people they now have this issue, maybe the more likely they'll try and fix it.

Are you frickin kidding me. I was hoping that WASNT the issue.

After I performed a Nand Backup I then realised restoring phone to stock rom prob wouldnt fix issue, that it must be something new altogether.

I'm in Galway city, have had the hero since Xmas, never had this issue until yesterday. But I wasnt manually moving from 3G to 2G nor was I in a poor reception area.

Havent tried the phone since that post last night. Tried it now. I have a signal.

When you expierence the 2G/3G prob is your phone automatically in Airplane mode? As in airplane mode is on, you have to turn it off (appeared to be my prob) or is it when you lose connection you turn airplane mode on first and then off to try reconnect signal?

Fingers and toes crossed but I may have solved my issue.

My prob sounds different to the dropped signal one. When I went to insert Sim again I noticed that when you lock it in place the Sim itself slides across ever so slightly. I used a pint to keep Sim in place and locked it in. Hopefully that's the end of my troubles!

Good news (for you) that you're not plagued by that problem!

Hopefully i continue to be lucky as regards that alright!

I still dont fully understand this dropping of signal problem. I have my phone set to 2G all the time, but will flick on 3G when using YouTube or something. I notice that the signal goes when you do this for a few seconds. Is this the infamous dropped signal prob? When you've your phone on 3G always and it loses connection the signal goes completely?
