Bought a second hand Canon 400d a few weeks ago, and have been learning my way around this whole photography business since.
These are a few of my first shots that I'm in some way happy with. I've probably posted some of them before in different threads here.
Any help/criticisms would be much appreciated. Thanks

Very good set, especially for a beginner. I particularly like number 3, I remember it from the Random thread. :)

Nice little set. Just a few pointers that quickly come to my notice.

#1. Nice shot. I like the foreground, big problem with the background. My eye is drawn to the huge amounts of blown out sky and dosn't really go back to the points of interest. If you were to shoot again, you could fix this in three ways. Use a graduated ND filter. Probably out of the question for you at the moment. The second is to use a flash on the foreground. It would help to reduce the contrast of light between the front and back. The third is to create a HDR image.

#2. I like this shot too. It looks a bit soft on the point of interest. The needle needs to be a bit sharper.

#3. Dosn't do anything for me. There is a bit of a glare from the water. A polarizing filter will help that out. The angle is a little wrong. Seems the action is going away from the camera. Try and engage the face, it will bring the viewer in to the image.

#4. Seen this earlier in the random thread. Nice enough shot. You could crop the image square. Next time, you could try and get down to his level to take the shot. I like the colour.

#5. Does nothing for me. Not very sharp. The image is a bit busy. You could do with zooming in closer on the bird. Nothing of interest in the rest of the image.

#6. I like this. Looks like the in camera monochrome setting with blue tone. Problem with it is the bottom half. The sky is much more interesting, so should be given much more prominence in the image. Try and concentrate on what is important in the scene and shoot that. You could crop the bottom third off the image and it would work.

#7. Crop it square and it could work.

    Hope this helps.

not that my opinion matters, but i'd agree with you on all of the above.

@6stringmaniac: if this is your start on camera's, i think you will do better than most.

Honestly ... these are great shots.

You'll get criticism here if you ask for it, whether it's warranted or not. Some people feel the need to lecture and patronise even though they need help themselves. No finger pointing, just saying as a general, take much of it with a shovel of salt.

The only image I don't like up there is # 6, and that's only as an overall image. The sky is grand, but why all the black in the foreground? You don't need half of that! Make that sky the feature of the shot, there's a huge chunk of black nothingness bottom of the shot that does nothing. Crop it out.

Otherwise lovely images, especially #1 and #3 - well done, and good luck in future. Take all opinion as just that, even mine ;)

Thanks alot for all the comments :D
I'll take all the advice on board. I tried cropping the black out of number 6 earlier, but it just looked a bit.... off. I think I was cropping out too much, I'll try again later.
