Wrong name of Vehicle reg cert! Help!

My mother is due to collect a new car tomorrow under the scrappage. Just reviewing the documents the Vehicle reg cert shows the garage she bought the car (was a demo) from in 1997 as the registered owner, it looks the change of ownership was never done. The car has been insured, taxed and NCT's be her since day one.

Anyone have any idea how this will play out tomorrow? Will this scupper the deal?

You might have to get it changed, which is a send to Shannon job :( As you know the trader in must be the registered owner to avail of scrappage. How did your mum receive motor tax notifications over the years ? If she has been receiving them than she must be the registered owner so perhaps an email/fax from Shannon to the garage may suffice.

Saab Ed would know, may be no harm PM ing.

Perhaps that is not the current reg cert for the car as if it was she wouldn't be getting notice to tax her car. Likely that the garage gave her a copy of the cert which was not current and the correct one for her ownership either was never sent out or was lost.

Certs are like passports, there is only one current one, copies do not exist.

    Bit of a long-shot here:

Dealer could have lost it originally, applied for a replacement, got the replacement, used this replacement to change ownership to OP's mother, the new VLC got lost in the post, OP Mother never receives and rang dealer to find out where the cert is, Dealer finds the original lost copy, gives to OP's Mother!

(OK Odds of this are 1:1,000,000, but its still possible!)

Don't worry, the Vehicle Registration Cert shows the first registered owner and is never changed (or needed). She just needs to find her Vehicle Licensing Cert (VLC), which will bear her name & address.

If you lose a cert, get a replacement, then find the original, you have two certs. One might not be valid, but if you're only looking at the old one, you have no way of knowing it's not the right one.

I lost a passport years ago, while moving house. Filed a report, got a replacement, then years later, the first one turned up, stuck inside a book. So now I have two. Now, I've cut the corner off it (the same way the Passport Office do) to invalidate it for security reasons, but it's easy to have two physical copies of almost any official document - it doesn't mean both are valid, of course.

If it is the case that the car was never reg. to your mother, she wont be able to do the deal.
You coulld spend 30 quid on a history check. if its says the car has 0 previous owners, its still on the name of the garage. If it has 1 previous owner, well its your moms. She can then get a replacement cert from shannon

But is it not unusual to have this cert. How would one end up having possession of the original reg cert?

From memory, they used to issue them in just the same way as the VLC. They actually look quite like a VLC too. I remember thinking them a bit pointless at the time.

It's essentially a cert to show the car has been entered on the vehicle register and thus VRT has been paid. While it's an official document it serves no purpose.

yep, if the car hasn't changed owners since the 90's you''re looking for a cert like this:

    vlc.jpg

If your mam has been getting tax renewals etc in the post then it's not in the garages name.

Complete an RF134 form and bring to Gardai, apply for new cert in tax office. one will come in the post after 7 days or so.

Guys, thanks for all the advice and now follows a public apology..

It was my mistake, the VLC was buried in another bundle of paperwork (my mom keeps EVERYTHING) that I had overlooked and found this morning.

Picked up the Clio this morning, what a smashing little car. Poor dear was overwhelmed by all the gadgets in the Tomtom, all she had on her old Pug were electric front windows!

    Thanks again.
