Should all students' email addresses be removed from UCC search?

Since the beginning of the 'John Murphy' fiasco and the widespread emergence of the ability to find a student's student email address from a search on UCC's website, my question is: do you agree with it? Should emails be accessible or hidden?

To be honest I'm divided on it. I never knew it could be accessed, granted it's not the email I use for everything but it's something I'd like have been consulted on. Then again a lecturer could use it to find my email if neccessary.

    For/against it?

*Mods: apologies if this breaks any set rules!

I knew about it before, I've found it handy a few times if I needed to email something to someone in my class but didn't have their mobile number or whatever, for working together on reports and stuff like that. And you can always just delete messages you don't want to read- it's not like someone prank calling, which you can't really do anything about.

By doing a very quick search 23,000 emails addresses of students come up in one list for anyone to see and use. This leaves all those addresses quite open to spam and so on.

I'd be up for them getting rid of them being publicly available and having a system where you can maybe search the email addresses of people in your year or something along those lines.

This was mentioned in another thread which made me set up this one. I think that search could lead to dangerous consequences if a student's email was hacked.

I think it'll be a useful tool for lecturers/tutors to get in contact. Beyond that I can't see it being used for students benefit. Maybe a case of reading into it too much but I don't see a need for it.

Simple solution, change the search to only show a certain amount of results per go, and have a link beside each person which you can bring to show up their email. If spammers/whoever wants email addresses is forced to get each address one by one it would pretty much put an end to it. I wouldnt remove the functionality altogether though.

Get rid of them from the site - and there is a system already set up where people can contact others in their modules through Blackboard. The message is sent to the person's @ucc email account, and because you have to be a student/lecturer to get into blackboard or have access to a password and valid username it is safer than having the emails online. Whatever lecturers are giving the course would be attached to the blackboard module, and you can email them through that as well

Have all modules online in Blackboard, including ones like maths that lecturers don't use Blackboard for - I don't see how many other people you would be emailing in the college that are outside of your college course. Anyone else you should probably know in person and can get an email address off
