    Yes both true!

What have you got to spend and what are you looking for in a car and I'm sure someone can suggest a far superior alternative

Ford Focus 3 door 1.6. Great handling car, the 1.6 is far better than the 1.4, and quite fun to drive. Seems to fit the bill.

106 gti or Saxo Vtr? You'll get a well minded example with that budget, there fast little cars and they have great handling.

Or you might get a clio sport for that price these days, loads of power in them and great handling too.

Colt Mivecs and Levins might be available for that price too although insurance on them will be expensive

ya i wa thinking of getting a levin but as i live in the west of ireland with its dreadful roads i think the superstrut suspension would just fall out or else i would be rattled to death

clio sports are 2.0 litre. but 3600 will get ya a good one.

106gti does seem to have a good rep for being fun, and doubt youll get anything quicker for a normal 1.6.

there's the obvious routes of mivec 1.6 mitsubishis like the colt and the mirage, and honda 1.6 vtec civics?

3600 will get a very decent 318is too. 1.8 up to 96, and 1.9 96-99. i love them, and the newer version is relatively quick, while being good on petrol

I could advise you the Ford Puma 1.6 or 1.7.

I've got the 1.4 model as the insurance (and fuel costs for the 1.7 was out of my budget) and its a really fun car to drive. I feel it has enough power for my likes and its a joy to drive everytime (though the seats are a little uncomfortable for long drives, I'ld advise carry a cushion!). It does around 30mpg when driven in a fun way. I say if you drive it carefully you can get upto 35-38mpg out of it.

The 1.7 engine is supposed to be much better than the 1.4 so I presume its only gonna be much more fun to drive than my 1.4. I think the 1.7 does around 35mpg combined.
