Skorts - unnecessary, uncomfortable & expensive!

Summer's nearly here and the camogie season is starting back Yah! I've got two girls who love it but hang on - what's with this rule about skorts being mandatory? Don't mind paying for hurleys, helmets etc but €35 for an uncomfortable (I'm told) skort when shorts are used by everyone. Let's get this silly rule dropped; it's adding unnecessary expense to parents and doesn't bring anything to the game!

I agree, but unfortunately the rule is there, has been for years and has to be obeyed. Goalkeepers can get around it by wearing wearing a tracksuit pants in goals, but everyone else must wear them. I'm refereeing under 12's with the skorts on, some clubs just keep them like the jerseys and give them out at games, others clubs get the players to buy them.

I didn't have to wear them as I was a keeper, but my friend used always take them off during the game - the skorts now are better apparently, but I don't honestly know!

Thanks Rebel Girl but if no one likes them, then why not get the rule changed? We've had lots of daft rules in this country over the years, especially for women, so why put up with it? It's unfair to girls and women and a extra burden on parents. let's face it regular shorts do the job just fine. how do I get a campaign going d'ya think?

I think the way it works is you would have to get your club delegates to the county board to ask the county board to bring a motion to Congress to change the rule. AFAIK, it would require a vote in your club to say that the club is behind it and a vote at the AGM of the county board before it would go to Congress

They are so unnecessary. My mam had to fork out around 30 quid each for mine and both my sisters. At a match, some girls decided they didn't want to wear theirs and the opposing team tried to fine us

The opposing team couldn't fine ye, but the ref can report it to the county board - not being in uniform. Same with the ladies football, have to wear the same coloured shorts and socks, we got fined last year for it!

I couldn't agree more. I don't understand why the camogie girls can't just wear shorts.

    Hi Joey 54
Rebel Girl has outlined how to go about getting the rule changed but first we need to build some support for this. Let's start by getting the discussion going and not settle for the "that's the rule" type answer.
    Why is it the rule?
What benefit is it to the players or the sport to wear uncomfortable gear that is costly for the parents, players or club (funded by both) to provide? Can't teams look just as smart in shorts and jerseys?
It may take some time to change things but let's make a start.
Anybody out there willing to defend the skort?

While I'm not involved with camogie I am involved with the GAA. In my opinion I think shorts would look just as good for camogie players as the skorts do.

I actually think sometimes the skorts can look untidy and be hanging around all over the place! Ladies footballers wear shorts so I don't understand why camogie players can't.

With regards to the financial element of skorts they are definitely going to bring a greater financial burden on clubs and parents due to the simple fact that clubs don't have as many players that need them therefore they don't benefit from bulk buying.

Shorts seem a lot more practical! I suspect the rule rule of the skirt in camogie comes from ye olden days!

I never minded skorts tbh I never thought them as uncomfortable and we didnt have to buy them, they were just given out with the jerseys.
So yah I have no problem with them..

Hi Deise girl so would it upset you if shorts were used instead? do you think it would matter or not mind either way?

Nope tbh I really wouldnt have noticed the difference between the two, coz I wore shorts for training. So I wouldnt be against skorts but I wouldnt be against wearing shorts either! If that makes sense..
