I want to buy a Tamiya RC car for drifting and gravel. I have a mk2 escort shell ordered from Retroracing in Finland but I can't decide which chassis to buy for the shell. The shell definitely fits a Tamiya DF-03 chassis and will more than likely fit a TT-01 but I don't know which would be most suitable for gravel AND tarmac. Any advice appreciated.

the tt01 woulnt be the best for gravel, its pretty low to the ground. Its more a touring car/ sports car. You would also want pretty smooth tarmac for it too.

The DF03 is a buggy though i am assuming you mean the DF03RA (rally version)
Id say this is your best bet, as you can lower it a bit and try you hand at drifting, but at least this will go on gravel and rough tarmac or your average car park.

Whichever you choose, be sure to remove the front diff for proper RWD action! :D
Though you'll only be able to doughnut with it like that, 4wd is essential for good long slides...

What's the quality like with the MKII Shell? I picked up a MK1 shell for a Mini chassis from Kamtec, but the details isn't the greatest.

If you're looking for wheels, I'd recommend these, in fact I'd get two sets, so you have one for the gravel tyres too! They're a smaller diameter than the Watanabe RS that the drifters use, but bigger than the Mini sized wheels.

For More RC fords, take a look at : http://www.tamiyaclub.com/sig_member.asp?id=55 there's a few of retroracing's escort's on there as well...

EDIT: Just had a look on www.retroracing.com, they're pretty good! all that's missing is a set of quarter bumpers, but you'd nearly make them up from leftover bit of sprue from the kit!

Another option for gravel tyres would be to use the Mini wheels, (or HPI True Ten wheels) and cut down some gravel tyres to fit:

its good from what i have seen of them. they give you the shell and (as usual) you must paint it yourself but it comes with a set of transfer stickers.
as far as i know they also give a set of minilite look-alikes to go under it. try looking up tamiya rc escort on youtube. some guy took a df-03 and made it RWD with the escort body. its class:D

Checked out a few vids yesterday, it has me itching to take out my uncompleted rally projects and finish them off once and for all...
