Update from a live cd

    Hi all,

I've 9.10 installed on an old box at home and it's working well. However this machine does not have internet access any more (wireless dongle got eaten by a 1 year old) so is it possible to upgrade to 10.04 using the live CD?

    Thanks

No, not at all. 10.04 contains a lot of new stuff, hence it won't be on the old version.

That doesn't mean you can't upgrade, though. The largest programs aren't going anywhere, with the exception of The GIMP, which will no longer be on the CD. You can install any new packages you want later, after upgrading. The disadvantage of upgrading (whatever the method) is that you don't get that "just installed" feeling.

I did an upgrade from CD a year ago, and haven't tried 10.04 this way, though I see it is supported. You have to get the Alternate CD Image for your architecture, not the standard Live CD or image, which uses a format that makes individual packages inaccessible, Full details are here.

I think you misunderstood and the OP wants to update an existing 9.10 installation with a 10.04 CD. It's perfectly possible, but recommended procedure is to format the root partition and install Lucid cleanly.

    Thanks pickarooney :)

OP: I though you meant upgrade to 10.04 using a 9.10 cd. Silly me!

yes it's possible, but i'd really recommend getting a new wireless dongle before you try as you would be missing lots of updates and patches

    Thanks for all the replies.

A new dongle was bought and the upgrade went like butter.
