NCT - Car Testing Programs - do they differ between models?

I thought I read something on here a while back (can't seem to find it now) that the before testing a car in the NCT centre that they had to have the program details of the car into the computer so as to be able to test it correctly. Does anyone know if this is true?

If it is I know they would have the details of newer cars but what about those of older cars from say the early 80's? What would happen if say a car was tested using a profile of a different model?

Have I got this "program profile" thing all wrong?

The NCT emission test is not car specific i.e they don't drive in your VW golf and then type in VW golf on the computer to see what the emissions should be,it is based on PPM (parts per million) over three different categories

    before 1986
    1986 - 1994
    94 onwards
