Changing Name on Parking Ticket

To cut a long story short, I left my job after I felt I was being treated unfairly. They then rang me a week later to say that they had received a parking fine for a company vehicle I was driving.

I have absolutely no interest in paying the fine, and feel that they should take responsibility for it.

It is my understanding that the fine is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle. Do I have any legal obligation to pay the fine?

    Did you commit the offence?

I parked the vehicle, so I committed the offence. However given the nature of the situation, and the fact that I was not properly briefed for the job, it is my firm belief that the company should take responsibility for the ticket.

The fine was addressed to the office, not my home address. I am asking if I have any legal obligation to pay it?

You as the driver are responsible for the ticket. I know with Garda issued speeding tickets, the driver can be named.

TBH, just pay the thing, give you the higher moral ground over the old job.

Our terms and conditions make each individual responsible for any motoring fines.

If you signed such a contract, then pay up.

I never signed a contract. They never even asked to see my driver's licence.

not properly briefed for the job
    To park correctly?

Not being properly briefed for the job I was employed to do had nothing to do with not being briefed on how to park properly. That's just silly.

Thanks for the links, I appreciate it.

I don't get why you brought up not being briefed then. I presume you have a full licence and you know the rules of the road in relation to parking. Fixed charge penalties are issued to the registered owner but allow them to nominate the name of the person who was driving at the time. Perhaps you could explain your reasoning behind the company being responsable.

What briefing do you need to park a vehicle?

You have a licence (dont you?), you know the rules of the road and you were responsible for a company vehicle.

You broke the rules and a fine followed.

How can you claim its not your fault?

ALL the OP wants to know is whether they have a legal obligation to pay the fine. I think they've made it clear that they're not looking for advice on the moral dimension, so let's keep it on topic from here on out.

Driver is responsible in these cases so OP would be obliged to pay the fine. Having said that, its up to the company to nominate the driver. It seems as though they are doing this so OP wont have alot of choice in paying the fine. OP would have to dispute the fact the he/she was actually driving the car. I dont think the OP is going to go that rough though so the fine will need to be paid.

Im sure the company can demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt that the OP was using it on that day if they had to.

I spoke to someone earlier who knows a lot about the topic. I did not realise that there was space on the back of the ticket for the registered owner to nominate someone else to pay the fine.

The fine was received over two weeks ago, but interestingly I have not yet been nominated.

Does anyone know whether, if I am nominated and receive the fine, it is possible for me to then nominate the registered owner?

only the registered owner can nominate the driver.

You will then receive the fine, if you fail to pay it you will receive a summons to court where you can then say that you were not the driver.

If you were indeed the driver (as it seems) you will be not only guilty of illegal parking (and have to pay the fine) you will also be guilty of perjury and depending on the judge you might just get an additional slap on the hand or something more severe.

What I am really saying, Man-up to your little indiscretion and forget about crap going on with your ex-employers, that had nothing to do with your motoring offense.

Even if you could, why would you mess with the law when it you know you were driving at the time?

I'm asking a question on legal matters. Not interested in your personal opinion.

Thanks guys for the helpful advice.

You are liable for the ticket. If you put the comapnies name on the ticket you will most likely be committing an offence. I think the actual offence is outlined on the ticket.
