Hi guys, need advice / opinions,

I'm finally getting rid of my thirsty passat, 07 1.6 petrol highline, and getting a diesel, however, thus begins my plight.i've a budget of circa 16K, although if i could get it a little cheaper it'd be nice, but i haven't a clue what to choose.

It'll have to have a decent mpg figure, big enough for baby and dog,4 or 5 doors, and of a decent spec. Also at least 07 upwards, and not too hard on the eye.And Iso-fix compatible.

I'm drawn towards a Saab 9-3, any thoughts on these? I also wouldn't rule out another passat. But would have to be highline spec.Fords are a No-No, just don't like them. Also i've seen a couple of Avensis, i've heard they'll give 60+mpg? Oh and my significant other said i'm not allowed to get an estate:rolleyes: apparently we're too young and cool,( but they very fact that she used the word "cool" to describe us negates the fact:cool:),women!, meh!

Anyway, i've been spending hours upon hours trawling through carzone and the like but can't settle on anything.

    Need help, Pleeeeeeeease!!!
    Thanks in advance.

Peugot 407 isn't too bad of a looker. Can't remember their diesel range but should be promising. Comfortable drive too! Shame about the estate. I just bought one and i'm only 20 ha. Handy for the Dog etc

    3 series BMW?

    Alfa 159 JTDM?

    Audi A4, or A6 maybe?

    Honda Accord i-CDTi?

    Volvo S50/60 diesel?

Few of them floating about on carzone under 16k

I'm not sure if they're IsoFix compatible or not, as I havn't a clue what that means. :o

    hehe..... child seat fixings

Do a test drive of a Accord, would also recommend having a go in a 3 series....

thanks so far, yeah i'd love a 3 series but i have heard an awful lot of complaints about them, from people who drive them, from about '07 onwards, silly small things going wrong, constantly, also, are they a bit bare on the extras, especially the irish spec cars.

I'm terrified to go near an alfa! although many say they are more reputable now? they are a guilty pleasure, but are they reliable enough?
A friend has an accord alright and he loves it.

I think the Accord looks the best out of the lot. I'd love one. As BigEejit says, go test drive one.

The FIAT 1.9 diesel in the Alfa 159 is reliable and used in several different cars, including the SAAB you're looking at. Edit - if it's the same size as a 156, then it might be a bit cramped though.

    Vectra?

    Avensis?

Mazda 6? I know a taxi man with one of these. He has 340,000 on the clock and it's rock solid!

    Octavia?

    Passat?

    Superb?

    Accord?

    9-3?

    S40?

    A4? FSH

Thanks bonito, above and beyond the call of duty, cheers :)
Thanks to the rest of ye too,

I'm working on convincing my significant other to agree on this

Anyone got opinions on it? Reviews are a lot more positive than say those of Passats etc, plus on the upside, you don't see too many around, although maybe there's a reason for that?

Obviously the price will have to be negotiated (there's a recession after all ;)), has anyone any dealings with the dealer?

While you're down there you should check out these.
Seems very good. Most of his cars seem to have FSH.

    One. A4

    Two. A4

    Three.
    Passat 170 BHP

    Four. Passat 140 BHP.

^^ That 170BHP Passat is lovely. Few extras in it too.

While it's a lovely looking car, a nice spec and reasonable mileage, there is no way in hell I'd be paying anywhere near €18,000 for a 2007 imported Saab!

€15,000 max for a minter, and even then - you are going to have to love the car as it's going to be yours for quite some time. Used Saab's are going for peanuts in the trade as there is no demand for them at all.

Yeah i was thinking it was high alright, especially compared to uk prices + vrt. Thanks
    ARGHHH!!!
Still pulling my hair out!!!!!! Don't know what to be doing.

    any thoughts on this?
Is there a reason that i'm not aware of, its a lot cheaper than the other ones? Do the diesels give much trouble, i know there were a few issues with fuel injector pumps alright.

Does this question really warrant "ARGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! " as the thread title? :D

YES!!! I'm pulling my hair out trying to find a car :D
But.... in my defence.....Its not my fault, living in a sensationalist society and under constant barrage from the tabloids and media, all i could muster was an attention grabbing headline that didn't really bear any relevance to the content :)

I have updated the thread title to be a bit more descriptive, while keeping the attention grabbing headline. Win win.

    This (i'm leaning toward this)

To be quite honest i don't mind what we get as long as it doesn't turn out to be a ball of **** in a year or two

Any thoughts on these? anything i should know? pro's and cons?
    Thanks guys

First Beemer is a UK import by the looks of the reg. Get a full history check to make sure it checks out. Should be OK for massive mileage - haven't had any real issues with E90 diesels.

They look like wheel trims on the 2nd Beemer even though it says Alloys. Can't remember ever seeing alloys like that on an E90. Looks fairly crappy tbh.

I'd steer well clear of the Merc. The only recent Merc I've driven that didn't have at least 3 warnings on the dash was the crappy van I took home last night. Build quality and reliability on that type of C-Class is woeful and current values reflect that. At least it's an Auto I suppose......

Ok, thanks for warning on the merc, that rules that out i suppose, a few friends said the same about them, i just checked the photos again for the wheels on the 2nd beemer, as crappy as they look are actually alloys, and wheels aren't reelly a major problem, they can always be changed, main thing though is that E-90's seem to be solid enough, now i just have to find one and haggle like i've never haggled before :)

I understand you don't want estates, MPVs, etc

Does 3 series have enough space at back and boot for kid, kids stuff, and dog? I am sure you will have less space then passat.

If it does have to be a saloon, skoda suberb will give you maximum space you will need. It uses longer version of passat chassis and gives plenty of space.
