Synesso Filter Baskets

I've had my silvia and rocky for four months now and know my way around it pretty well. I'm not at the stage where I'm considering a PID yet as I've come to believe from reading loads of related forums that there is a load of other stuff I can improve on first without splashing out on an expensive piece of kit.

So this week my 3 new filter baskets arrived in the post direct from Seattle, the synesso 14g ridgeless double, the 18g ridgeless triple, and the 21g triple (I have to mention how efficient and friendly the lady at synesso was in dealing with my queries, the postage was expensive but the package arrived in no time at all...with a free synesso t-shirt to boot! Highly recommended).

Anyway I noticed immediate results in the quality of my shots, amazing crema with loads of tiger-striping and mottling and all the rest! My next purchase is a good tamper and I'm wondering does anyone know from experience what size I should go for to fit these baskets the best? Also, what about the base shape- what are peoples preferences and why? Every forum I read seems to pick a different one....

Your thoughts would be much appreciated...

Well they're 58mm baskets - so a 58mm tamper. If you are going to buy somewhere that can go down to .1mm increments then I'd go 58.3mm for a snugger fit.

As to base shape I like curved.

I'm using a Gaggia Classic with an Iberital 58mm tamper (nice and heavy!) but it could be a lot snugger. Would you recommend 58.3 for this as well? And where would I get it?

I must dig out my Vernier calipers and take some measurements!

Reg Barber is what I have used.

I would check (measure) to make sure your Iberital is actually 58mm. Sometimes tamper manufacturers can be loose with the accuracy of their descriptions.

I think I have some 58.3 and some 58.4 tampers. Seem to fit nicely on most baskets out there.

Though I do remember have difficulty with a certain basket at one point.

would definitely say go over 58mm - I recently got a reg barber and though i love it I'm wishing I went a few 0.1mm's bigger.

I've been waiting for coffeehit in the UK to get their synesso double baskets back in stock - may have to follow suit of the OP and just go direct to synneso :D:D:D

Yeah I got tired of waiting for coffehit to get those baskets back in stock myself so I said sod it I'll go direct! (Although speaking of coffeehit, the adjustable pressure click tamper mats they sell have just come back in stock, I think i might just invest in one...) It was a suprise to discover they even delivered to Ireland seeing as its not mentioned on the synesso website.
With regards to my tamper shopping, I got an email back from synesso saying that a base up to 58.9mm will even fit, but she recommended something around 58.5mm. So I've decided to get a reg barber 58.5mm tamper with a US-curve base which will hopefully fit snugly...just have to raid the piggybank in search of 90 notes now....

I just got a Synesso ridgeless double basket and Reg Barber 58.5mm US-curve from coffeehit too! Such a nice tight fit, a revelation really. Fully recommended. :D

Also replaced all the seals and springs in my E61 group... pretty easy really, don't know why I was so daunted.

Totally OD'd on espresso now
