Just wondering if the specimen paper provided on the website is entails everything that must be done in the actual entrance test. Because i got a specimen paper in the post, i remember it being different to the one on the website, but i lost it and can't really remember!

Any help would be really appreciated!

    Hi,
yeah the specimen paper on the website has everything that comes up on the test :)

The essays are easy. I'd recommend focusing on the composition, they are not looking for an equivalent of the leaving cert four bar melody. A bit of imagination would be appreciated i'd say :)

If you've any basic knowledge of harmony i'd show it off too.

thanks! I'm actually looking forward to the essay and the playing, and knowing that the only real theory part is a small composition relaxes me a bit!

How long should the piece be? It does'nt stare how long, and should you use a bass line, and moulation? thanks in advance!

As regards for bassline that's upto yourself really, depends what instrument you choose; you could write it only bass, only treble, or both.

I'd demonstrate knowledge of modulation if possible, the more imaginative the better, they're really trying to avoid the l.c. music way of composing which is very formula based.

Length wise, i'd say two-four lines, depending on what your ideas are of course.

This info is more geared towards the third composition on the specimen paper (birdsong), obviously wouldn't work for the reel/jig option.

ya it would'nt, thanks. I'm a drummer, and cannot really write a piece that is'nt in the l.c way, or else there would be mistakes all over the place! Although it's not what they are looking for I have to do the A A1 B A2 thing. Ah well, the melody writing is just to show that you can write music i suppose, I will just have to show any creativity playing and in the essay, which should be enough really. It seems as though they are'nt looking for a finished product, just potential...

    thanks again Lean!

Just hope the piece is'nt entitled rainy day or something like that, I can't really do melody writing and modulate in minor keys!
