Deposit issue

I hope I'm posting this in the right place!

Last September, I moved out of an apartment and was supposed to get my deposit (1400 euro) returned. However, this has still not happened. There was no reason for me not to get the deposit back, everything was left in the same condition in the apartment as when I moved in etc.

I have since sent numerous e-mails to the property agent I was dealing with and spoken to him on the phone. Unfortunately, he has been ignoring my phone calls lately and I sent an e-mail last Friday which has still not been responded to.

I would really like to get this money back, so I'm wondering what I should do next?

Contact Threshold and have them help you take a case to the PRTB.

It's the only thing you can do right now. It will probably take months to resolve but you've already waited 7 or 8 months.

Do you know the landlord to find out if the agent actually has the money?

If they are deliberately dragging their feet in that timeline, thats theft in my view.

Get talking to a human face to face, drop into their offices constantly to get your money back. Log your case straight away with the PRTB.

I'd say contact Threshold to get the ball rolling, they might even contact the landlord for you, but there are some steps you can take that might also help.

Most importantly inform yourself of all your rights in relation to the matter so you can rebut any claims the landlord/agency has to your deposit.

Then contact the agent by calling into their offices and inform them politely that you are aware of the conditions that a landlord can withhold a deposit for and mention that you will contact the PRTB in relation to the matter.

In my experience at this point they may re-consider the matter and not see you as such a weak target and refund the deposit OR most of it. If not all of it initiate proceedings with the PRTB and have everything ready.

Oh and unfortunately if you're foreign I think they see you as a particularly easy target for withholding. They believe you will be less aware of your rights and might be leaving the country unable to follow up on any claims..

PRTB should be your last option.:)
