I noticed last week that after my 10 mile journey to work the brake disc on the rear right hand side was very hot,so hot in fact you could barely touch it the left side was hot but not as bad,I havent noticed any noise and brakes work perfectly.I brought it to garage yesterday and he said they were fine he checked pads, discs etc and said this is normal!I have long journey this weekend and wondered is it safe or has anyone else expieienced this. Thanks in advance for ANY help or advice.

Something doesn't sound right, the disc could be warped and the guy might have missed that. Get it checked by another garage. You can't take chances with brakes.

Brake discs are often going to be too hot to touch, nothing unusual there. It's also not unusual to have one disc slightly hotter than its partner on the same axle. But if one disc is way hotter than its partner or if the rear brakes are way hotter than the fronts, then that could indicate a problem. I have known of a few Almeras with intermittently sticking rear brakes that needed to have a caliper stripped down and cleaned/greased. If you have a sticking brake you will probably notice some drag in certain situations eg if you are on a slight hill and take the footbrake and handbrake off and the car doesn't start to roll, that would be a sign.

If they only checked the pads and disks then they haven't checked the obvious thing that would cause the symptoms you describe, the caliper and to be more precise the caliper piston seals. If they are damaged then they will allow water and debris into the piston stopping it from moving freely and to stick.

Sorry forgot to say he did check calipers and said they were fine he also brought it outside and left it roll down hill no problem he said he would change the calipers for new ones if i wasnt happy but he didnt think it necessary,I am just worried about the long journey this weekend maybe i should get different mechanic for 2nd opinion on caliper pistons thanks

Something similar happened to my Almera, but it was the left rear. The pad got stuck in the caliper slider and was touching the disc.

I had to change the pads & discs at the rear and clean the caliper slider with a wire brush. It hasn't reoccured since.

I thought those Almeras had drum brakes on the back?

Anyhow they do have a problem with the handbrakes sticking on them.

The first of the N16 Almera had discs on the back. They changed to drums fairly fast but the facelifted ones got discs on the back in '04 (IIRC - Prob came in with ABS). My '05 one has discs on the back.

My almera (2004) 3 door has tear drums. Mechanic recommended that I replace the shoes. The rear brakes are squealing when i hit them. Also I'm noticing when i drive the car after its been parked for a couple hours that I press the pedal but the brakes feel like they are barely responding. After I work them a couple of times they respond more normally. I'm convinced the abs isnt working but have no warning light which means there is no problem or so im told. Anybody here had problems similiar?
