Insurance Question

My girlfriend is about to buy her first car. It's a great deal on a cheap little runaround - but as she's only just got her provisional insurance is extremely expensive. I was thinking it might be better/cheaper if I got the policy in my name and put her on as a named driver.

Can I do this, can I be insured on two different cars at two different addresses etc?

Would the car be in your name as well? Personally I wouldn't. Her insurance will probably drop quicker as the main driver; plus you just shouldn't really be insured as a named driver when you're the main driver.

Well its a 1.6 so its hard for her to get a quote as shes on a provisional. Might be easier if for at least this year I insure it and I put her on the policy as 3rd party. Like when I started driving I was on my mums policy. Then get her her own when she has a full licence.

But is it allowed/legal for me to be insured on 2 cars and her as a named driver on one or both?

Another thing to remember is your no claims bonus can only apply to one policy. So if you take out insurance on her car you won't have any no claims discount on it which means you won't get it much cheaper, if cheaper at all, since being female she'll get cheaper insurance.

Well she's getting the car at an absolute steal - great nick and dirt cheap from a friend so its hard to say no, but I know 1.6 is not ideal.

Good point cruizer it might not be worth it to do it in my name.

The car is worth fek all so maybe all she needs is 3rd party Fire and Theft. That might take it down a bit.

What insurance companies/brokers are good to try for young female drivers?

Its a false economy going fully comp on a car worth very fek all. In the event of a claim/write off, you'd get a pittance for it.
TPFT all the way - get a broker to do the drudgery for you to see what they come up with.
Directly, try quinn, they take new driver learner business.

You can be insured on as many cars as you like as we don't seem to have a proper multi-car policy system over here (I don't know about different addresses). But you won't be the main driver, your girlfriend will - but she won't be insured as the main driver.

Insurance could find a way to screw you over big time come claim time.

It's not really "screwing you over" though, if you're knowingly getting insurance under false pretences.

Have you tried getting a quote for her as main driver with a more experienced driver as named driver (like her mam or dad)?? This can bring a quote down dramatically.

OK thanks so if I put myself on as a named driver on her policy then it might be cheaper?

It might do - it worked for my wife before she got her test.

    Hi mate,

    have you tried Zurich?

Yoru best bet would be to get the policy in her name and put yourself as a named driver on the policy (as long as you are over 25).

The Insruance company sees this as a lesser risk as they think you will be driving the car sometimes so she wont have it the whole time. Call Zurich and state she wants to add her 'common law spouse' to the policy. You will knock hundreds off! Or go online to a broker like insure.ie or chill.ie and put the above details in yourself.

personally it sounds like you are thinking of just the damage she might do to her low value car, what if she caused damage to a high value car?if it was your insurance and she was just named then your premium for both cars could go up a lot.

in answer to your insurer broker question, i would go to a broker in your situation. they could get quotes for both scenarios and give a bit more professional advice on what could happen in the event of any claim for the different insurances

i would recommend kelleher insurance based in drogheda, they are the only brokers out of 6 ive used that i would recommend, found them easy to deal with and good knowledge. i also used the one in dundalk and didnt find them very helpful tbh.dont know if its a different company or just a branch

Try one direct. Myself and girlfriend are both insured with them. I am a named driver on her car and she is a named driver on mine. We get a discount for having a partner as a named driver and we also get discount for having 2 policies and also a further discount as our health insurance is with Aviva.
