Last part was a bit of a let down... I guess it was a bit of an experiment, but didn't really work.

But the first 2 parts are brilliant.

It was shown at the anime weekend in the IFI recently. Unfortunately a lot of the audience didn't seem to really appreciate it and there was a lot of annoying fidgeting going on in the cinema.

Yeah same, I didn't really care for the last part. It was so slow and nothing really happened. I assume you're talking about the episodes and not the different parts of the first episode.

Yep. The director was making a lot of music videos at the time and thought it might be a good idea to tell the last episode as a music video apparently.

Yeah bought it ages ago. You should check out his other films voices of a distant star and the place promised in our early days, both excellent but 5 seconds is his masterpiece.

yup, that dude is purely awesome,i think he did everything on his own.imagine that!

voices of a distant star was my first one i watched and was totally stunned.

i highly recommend Fantasy Railroad in the Stars(2006) if you like this type of thinking anime :D (and the dreamy anime effects)

I've been meaning to watch this for a while now.
I'll have to go home and watch it on the projector :) Get the right atmosphere going.

Yeah tis a fantastic little film, really manages to draw a lot of emotion out of small, everyday occurances like missing a train. Third part probably isn't as good alright, but it is brief and helps emphasise some of the themes.

Shinkai is definitely one of the better anime directors out there today. I'd put him up there with the likes of Satoshi Kon as people who can make very innovative pieces of work. Shinkai's films remind me of the smaller scale Ghibli stuff like Whisper of the Heart and Ocean Waves. Voices of a Distant Star is definitely one to check out.
