    Hey all,

    Have just bought a 2006 BMW 116.

The Car has 24k Miles on the clock and the service light is showing.

Am handy with cars and normally service them myself. but seeing as its the cars first service (which was actually due at 25km) should i just get it done by bmw?

Also the car has a silve bezel across the dashboard in carbon fiber but i prefare the silver one.... anyone know where i can get a replacement in silver?

    Tks in advance

How much are you gonna save servicing it yourself compared to having a FSH when you want to sell it on?

I'd bring it to the garage.

The thing is that if you have the Full Service History you'll get better resale value.
My suggestion is to let them do the big ones and then you can do the smaller in-between services yourself.
It all depends on if you plan to sell the car at a later stage or hold on to it for many years.

I would say the first service is overdue, seeing as it's usually due in X miles or X years, which ever comes first. Doubt it's 4 years!
If you do service it yourself, buy the genuine parts and keep receipts.

Teh car is well overdue a service imo. AS above I'd say it says X miles or X months/years, whichever comes first but even if it did'nt the car could have spent 4 hours sitting in traffic everyday.

Look up your vehicle on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/, Find the part you need, get the part number and ring up the dealer. They'll order it in for you.

A brave driver to come on here and admit buying a 116i:D

    Says Mr. Astra!!*

That's a bit shocking OP if it hasn't seen a ramp in 4 years . I presume you bought it private? No garage would send a 3 year overdue car out for sale.

*Not that I drive one or anything :o

Wow. I havent seen that kinda madness in a while.

It should be due an NCT. I'd check the oil before you drive it.

Is this a statement or are you really not sure what you bought? (if you go round the back there will probably be a badge somewhere)

It's not a complicated car really. Bring it to a decent indy. The apprentice will probably be doing it in BMW anyway...

    youd be surprised,

i saw a few 645s last year with no evidence of any servicing 04 and 05s

As a 116 owner I would certainly take it to a main dealer for this service so as to have a full check up. I generally get the bigger services done in the main dealer and do the samaller items in between myself. Some BMW dealers are doing a special of €130 for oil and filter change but you will be looking at an air filter, micro filter, brake fluid and coolant change as well.
What I have done in the past is call in to the service desk and get an approx. price. This can't be done over the phone as they will need to read the key for an accurate report.
Happy motoring, they are a good little car, excellent handling but lacking in rear leg room.

Shouldn't this be a question you ask before you buy a car?

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,223 ✭✭✭✭biko

From a BMW authorised mechanic/dealer could be more than 500 for service (inspection 1).
    List of things they do

Agree with above, as a 120d owner, I would take your car to your local BMW stealer for its first service. They will also inform you of any recalls etc that have affected this car as it only entered the market around 2004/2005. Also, there are a couple of issues that can affect these cars such as DSC controller which can be claimed against BMW but only if you can prove it has been maintained by BMW.

After that, I would do it myself or use third party specialists like AC in Dublin 8.

This website is your friend: http://www.c3bmw.co.uk/

There are lots of savings to be made over dealer prices. Most things like oil and air filters and oil etc can be just picked up at a motorfactors also.

Edit: Real OEM is a great site also for finding out parts numbers and locations, my post is in reference to buying the parts.
