Suggestions for what to do with website/domain getting decent traffic?

    Hello,

I set up a classified site way back in 2003, after some initial promise it never took off though it always attracts about 8,000-10,000 visits a month, used to be a lot higher.

I put Google Ads on it a few years ago and it makes about €200 a year, more than covering the hosting of the site and worth my while leaving running.

Recently the site just gets a lot of spam ads and is now bringing up warnings under Google Chrome/Firefox. I don't think its worth the time effort to go about fixing up, its running under an old php classified script that has many problems/vulnerabilities.

As its still pulling in some revenue and traffic, I don't want to close it altogether but its obviously missed the boat in terms of its original intention.

What I'm wondering is if there is a way of making more money out of the site/domain doing something else with it?

I've other business plans at the moment so don't want to be investing a lot of time effort into coming up with something new.

Just wondering if I could use the traffic the site gets for better use.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

8000-10000 hits or unique visitors a month?

    Thanks for the reply,

It's visits, with about 45,000 hits.

Used to be about 15,000+ visits but has dropped off in recent times.

    Thanks

Try charging E0.55c to post a classifieds advert and make sure your users know that there is 45,000 hits per month on the site. This might bring in some revenue for you and it will definitely stop the BS spam adverts. I've tried it myself. Spammers aren't willing to pay to spam.

Another way of stopping spammers is set up a login system. So posters have to login before posting anything. You'll get very few spammers willing to give you their details.

www.irelands-directory.com cold called me about 6 weeks ago selling advertising.

As far as I can remember they wanted €399 for 6 months advertising. If you look at the amount of premium ad's on the site they are certainly selling some.

If you got some sort of a sales strategy together it might work for you.
If you could get sales strategy together you might crack it.

The first thing you are going to have to do is upgrade your software. If you Google is bringing up warnings when people are hitting the site, you will lose a lot of traffic fast. It sounds like you might have phishing files uploaded to your website through the vulnerabilities. That would need to be checked.

Do you mind me asking what the website is? Dependent on the name there could be various uses. Is it close to a famous brand? Or a really generic word.com or something?
