I assume your using photoshop? Go to the layer tab right click on layer and go blending options! Go to blend if and move the black side to the right until you get desired outcome:D

Use the screen blend mode, does a much better job at removing black from an image.
Although it depends what colour you want to replace it with.

Do i use Select > Color Range with a screen blend mode then?

Put the background image you want on a layer beneath the image.
Then select the blend mode from the layers pallet for the top layer.
    THe default is "Normal"

    Heres a video:

    Example here for blending blacks:

Also with your image you could use a threshold to create a layer mask.

Surely the black is as much part of the image as the chalk marks, and the picture is not going to work with the black removed?

The OP didn't say what he wanted to replace it with.

It actually works well with a red background.

Use the extract tool in photoshop. Tutorial here: http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/cutout/cutout.htm

White will difficult as the image is mostly light tones close to white.
Try inverting the image and colourising it.
