had sky a few years ago. cancelled the subscription but could recieve all the freeview channels such as the bbc's and e4. then one day it said there was no signal being recieved. Any suggestions on where to start? the dish seems very secure. i have ensured all leads are connected. i have tried the signal test and it is showing no signal...

    Anyone.....

Could be a faulty LNB? Have your tried any other box connected to you satellite?

First things first , you need to isolate where the problem is.

Firstly disconnect the feed at the back of the box and if required remove any dirt on the copper part of the cable with a clean linen cloth and if required an alcohol based cleaner. Then screw it back in, see if the problem continues.

If the problem continues then if you have a friend or better still a next-door neighbour with a working sky or freesat box ask them can you try your box on their feed/cable and also try their box on your feed/cable .

If your box fails to work on their feed , you need a replacement box.

If their box works on your feed there is a problem with your dish or cables/feeds to your box.

Post the results here and we can go from there.

cheers folks. i will try your suggestions this weekend and see how it goes.
i wouldnt have thought the box was faulty because i still have full menus and guides - just no channels. but i know very little about this!

See, i find this really unusual and im wondering is Sky behind this, have these old boxes become disabled somehow, is that possible? Or have the frequencies changed for some channels? Or satellites moved?!

This happened to my freeview channels just after Christmas, we were moving house a few weeks later so didnt bother getting someone in to try realigning the dish, and we now have a Sky sub at our new place, so i dont know what the problem was, but the channels just disappeared. But only some of them, BBC 1 & 2, Channel 4, but we still had Ch4+1 and ITV

However, it has now happened to my parents sky channels, and they have an old Grundig box too, and only the free channels. Again they havent gotten round to getting someone in to try and fix it, so we dont know if its just a dish realignment or faulty LNB or what. They first lost only some channels, like i did, but now all the channels are gone

The LNB on my old dish was brand new as it happens, so i know it wasnt that.

    Very very weird.

Have you cold booted the box?

What exactly is a cold boot??

I also think sky might be behind this, after all its their equipment being used to access the freeview channels!
When i first cancelled my subscription i could not recieve any channels, but then i accidentally discovered that when you remove your sky card you could recieve all freeview channels..

Unplug it and count to 10 (the old IT Crowd solution) whenever I've lost the signal or the sound or got "stuck" on a channel thats always worked

its unplugged every night so i can pretty much rule that out. cheers anyway though

The signal on my Humax went earlier this week - fortunately I had an old Lidl box to test with and just stripped it back to the minimum configuration taking out all the possible failure points (dish alignment, various connections).

I ended up hanging the satellite box out my front window before concluding it was just a simple loose connection - the neighbours thought I was nuts!

Its usually something simple in the end - its just a process of elimination
