    Apoogies but i'm a complete novice on all this kind of stuff but..........if you have a HD ready or HD type TV, do you need a different type of sat box than what is needed for an older type SD TV ?

    You don't 'need' to have one, an SD satellite receiver can be used on a HD ready TV, but the picture will be in standard definition, and you won't be able to receive any HD channels. A HD receiver (eg. Sky HD box) is required to get the full benefit of your HDTV, and produce HD picture.
