I like something a little bit different on the mic.

People like Mick Foley, who has cut some unbelieveable promos in his day.

Jake Roberts was unbelieveably compelling, never raising his voice and yet getting his point across.

Arn Anderson was one of the most underrated of all time.

Dusty was absolutely incredible back in the day.

Vince has to be up there.

One of my personal favs and one who i often think gets forgotten due to people like The Rock being first to spring to mind. I remember a time when i'd say that "5mins of foley on a mic is better than 30 normal minutes of Raw". It seemed for a period no matter what it was he was talking about he could make the crowd interested and get into it. He had a great nack of making everything seem truely personal and more real by citing his own actions/past with regards to whatever his topic.

used to love the unexpected car crash noise followed by his music, for me it was like the SCSA glass smash as you didnt always know it was coming but once it hit a smile crept across my face, like im sure most would if they heard "If you smellll...." now.

Yep Foley on the mic was usually brilliant. Some of his promos in between 99-01 and I think it was his last one with the WWE, with Edge were absolutely superb.
Vince likewise, for 4-5 years his promos were top notch.

Bret in 97 when he turned heel did some really good mic work.

Anything with Rock and/or Jericho on the mic I really enjoyed, especially the latter.

In recent times I've been liking Desmond Wolfe.

    'Poop'

    'Kurt Mangled'

I love the way he throws in the odd 'bolox' here and there... how he 2 finger salutes the crowd on his ring entrance.

Anything that makes me chuckle is always good.

He's brimming with confidence and he's the type of heel who you want to see get pummelled after an interview... which is how any good heel should be.

It wasn't even the crowd pleasing Foley promos I liked the most.

It was the really serious ones. He was the master of cutting a promo on the final TV show before a PPV that made you REALLy want to see the match ion the Sunday. Like the one he cut on Orton before their match, or the one on Edge before the Taker match, or the sit down interview with JR as Mankind. His ECW stuff was amazing as well.

And "w*nkers" as well. Doubt the Yanks even know what it means.:pac:

Americans in general (have had this conversation with a few) dont have a clue what **** mean (though they can guess) nor do they do the 2 finger salute (Taiwanese think its like the peace sign :pac:).

I agree fully on the Foley thing but i guess when i look at favourites on the Mic, I think of someone who you could just hand a mic and even if he had nothing to say (i.e his character had nothing going on) he would somehow come out with captivating stuff. Someone who can cut a promo about nothing and get the whole crowd involved is literally the best on the mic. Thats why people love the Rock so much as put a mic infront of that guy and you were guaranteed gold no matter what he had to talk (or sing :D) about.

I can't actually listen to it because I'm at work, so I'm not sure what the quality is like, but I've always loved this. And special mention to Triple H too. When he's not making 'Dick' jokes or breaking kayfabe, he can be great on the mic, both as a heel and as a face

JBL in my opinion was one of the most talented wrestlers in this regard

A shout out for Bubba Ray Dudley too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 89,007 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

Punk is in a legend of his currently imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,640 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

The Rock is the obvious one.

I was also a fan of Kurt Angle when he first came to WWE. I think for a guy in his first year he was remarkably at ease in the heel role when you compare him to some of the heels nowadays who struggle. Very entertaining.

Surprised no one mentioned the Hulkster. For all his faults he is surely one of the best on the mic. Terry Funk is another great talker.

Roddy Piper and Randy Savage also would be up there. Of recent times I'm a big fan of Edge on the mic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭danny29

Cannot Believe no one mentioned Sting. If i have to choose only one that would be him.. just listen to his promos. He has been entertaining the fans for 2 decades and hes still got it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,984 ✭✭✭Degag

    Apart from JBL,

Kurt Angle was phonomenal on the mic, better than anything in the 'E at the moment. Taker was very good in his ABA days when he could display a personality. Miz is great at the moment. Jericho and Michaels of course are also fantastic.

People may laugh when i say this, but Santino is awesome also. The guy can wrestle apparently and if given a chance he could get really over. Hell, he's one of the biggest jobbers in the WWE atm and he gets Santino chants every night!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,030 ✭✭✭jpb1974

Santino can be highly entertaining at times.

He's just a little too over as a comic and it's hard to take him seriously as a wrestler sometimes.

Had to re-watch this again... :D

Going a bit more into it, Just like Foley did with Triple H in 99-01 and Orton in 04, he put over Edge so decidedly well that they became bonafide main eventers after hovering right under that glass ceiling.

Triple H and Edge's first title reigns were totally credible. Orton was on the cusp of getting into the WHC hunt, but Foley's the one who really cemented that these were the top players now.

Now that's what we call REALLY putting people over

    A few favourites.
    The Rock
    The Miz
Cody Rhodes (Give him time and he is awesome, point in case, making Ted look like he had charisma)
    The Brain
    Coach
    Jericho
    JBL

Disagree completly with Bubba Ray. He comes from the Tommy Tiernan school of I AM GOING TO SHOUT TILL YOU AGREE WITH ME.

Sorry but are your serious about Rhodes

I am indeed. He will shine on his own mark my words. Ted is in the same both as Orton. Orton has more charisma but the 2 sounds so monotonous its insane.

Regal can get the crowd going nuts with his mic skills and manerisms. Deserves a mention.

    Part 2

    Part 3

Edge and Foley seem to get emotional as the promo goes on.

    Mr. Anderson............................Kennedy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,196 ✭✭✭Ridley

Pretty much been said but the ones that come to mind:
    Jericho

Punk - though it's more his mannerisms than delivery
Foley - "You bring your ovaries and I'll bring my... guys!"
Edge (and Christian in the Attitude Era) - "When you grow up... you're gonna be WRONG!"
    HBK
    Kurt Angle
    Al Snow
    Stevie Richards
    Roddy Piper
    Road Dogg... maybe
    Bobby Heenan
    JR
I'll appreciate Matt Striker even if nobody else will. ;)

Not favourites but I'll credit Miz, Raven, Rock, Vince McMahon, Bischoff, Triple H and Cena that i can think of.

I'm skipping past many of the posts to just echo the praise for Mick Foley. You wouldn't think it but the man really really has done some fucking amazing promos....

Jake Roberts was great but he never really said anything. I don't think him and his matches had great storytelling like what Foley put in - not Roberts' fault at all and of course once the bell rang he told the only story that mattered! I just think Foley trancended the levels of a mere "stick-man" like The Rock and into the level of giving a great performance.

I can't find what I think is one of the best Cactus jack promos and that's the week after he and Funk had been beaten by the New Age Outlaws. Cactus got on the mike very emotional and spoke about how insulted he felt when fans started chanting "Austin, Austin" while he was having his skull bashed off of the steel cage.

+1 on a lot of these guys, but I cannot believe nobody's mentioned Jesse Ventura. I also think Ted Dibiase was great in the day, though he was certainly helped by his gimmick.

And I'd second the shout out for Jake Roberts particularly - nobody could inject a straightforward speaking voice with quite so much... menace.

    Arn Anderson was really good.

I'm not sure if any one has mentioned Bret Hart yet. When he first returned, i remember people saying he wasn't very good on the mic. A lot of the current roster could learn alot from him.

I'd agree with you there. Bret was a heel at first in the WWF before he turned into the loveable hero giving kids in the front row his shades and all that.

This little piece was really good :

I think the above was his best piece of mic work. Bret was/is a smart educated man with a good vocabulary so he had a good handle on words. That line "when I beat Stone Cold Steve Austin to a bloody pulp" always stuck in my head.
