Just got a call from a (sounded middle-eastern or possibly Indian) guy saying he was working with microsoft or something, and that they were ringing around to "help protect people against spyware". This guy asks me to turn on my computer and he'll "guide me through a few simple steps". At this point I told him my computer was fine thank you very much, and hung up.
Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

No, sounds like a con. Maybe send an email to the Microsoft press office and they will look into it.

Oh, well at least it's common then. Alright, that's not so bad. So they're just cold-calling people eh? Where do they get the numbers?

I got calls like that before, but they were continous, and they knew my name but not my address... ended up calling the gards, and it was a call centre in India phishing for personal details etc

If you delete your system32 folder the calls will stop. :)
