can anyone point me in the direction of a la haine dvd that has readable subtitles? I was digging through my stuff from when my parents moved house and I found my dvd of the movie, so I thought great I'll stick it on now..but I had forgotten some brainless jackass put white subtitles on this black and white movie. They're readable half the time, but I have to seriously struggle to make them out otherwise.
I'm gona try stick it out, but I can see myself turning the movie off in frustration after a short while.

I always thought subtitles were rendered by the DVD player, and therefore have options - to outline, change colour etc.

    Unless I dreamt it...

well if that turns out to be true, I'm going to feel like a right idiot :)
--edit I thinkthe subs on this are hardcoded onto the video

The Tenth Anniversary edition has new subtitles which are better than the original, Amazon sell it here and the following is taken from the blurb

"The DVD, however, let Kassovitz down. In the original release, the sub-titles are almost indecipherable - they are lost against the black and white of the film, and translate the French into Americanisms which lose much of the force of the language. The special edition resolves this, making the action much easier to follow - so go for that. 'La Haine' is already a classic piece of French - and European - cinema, and is a must watch for any true film fan"

Blu Ray is not a great transfer according to the great and good (ok, the reviews on Amazon!!!!, I was thinking of upgrading to BR but don't think I will bother now.)

No, DVD subtitles are either hard-coded onto the frame (rare) or stored as a very low res (and low quality) pre-rendered text overlay. Both options are pretty crappy.

Normally I rip my DVDs and then embed a soft text subtitle file into them. At least that way they're rendered on the fly in good quality, and you can change size, colour etc. Obviously that's no good if you're watching on a regular DVD player, its only for HTPCs or media boxes etc.

And if they are hard-coded onto the frame already (as with La Haine), then its not a great option either.

Rip the DVD and reencode it with yellow subs and either play from the PC or burn another copy?

I'm assuming it's legal in Ireland to back up your own DVD for personal use, apologies if that's not the case.
