Horsearchery and Asian style thumbring archery in Ireland

    Hi guys

I was one of the few people who researched, practiced and promoted Ottoman style traditional archery and horsearchery in Turkey. I have moved now to Dublin/Dun Laoghaire since Nov 2009 and
I am practising archery in the Dun Laoghaire archery club.
I heard that few people experimented with the thumbdraw here in Ireland. So if anybody is interested in learning the thumbdraw technique or to learn more about the Asian style bow, I am happy to help.
    Here is a short vid:

The other thing is horsearchery. I will start it in Ireland. See my other post in the Equestrian forum. I am attending different international horsearchery events, demonstrations or competitions, a nice thing would be e.g. to go to the European horsearchery championships with an Irish team.

Basically where I am stuck is to find a place, a livery yard or riding club with enough space for a track and of course they have to support me.
This vid is from a demo just from last weekend in England, I demonstrated horsearchery with a 92lbs bow with thumbdraw:

I can use riders who will have to learn archery or I can go the other way and train archers how to ride and shoot arrows on horseback. So better start riding now hehe.

Any thoughts on Asian style archery or horsearchery are welcome. Maybe you have ideas how to set up horsearchery in Ireland? Maybe you want to support me? Tell me if you would be interested in any aspect, I am thinking of organising a seminar or workshop this year.

    Thanks

    Gokmen

There's a guy doing horse archery here in Louth (out by Killin maybe..??). But yeh all I know, from my mate who went for a lesson, is that back in his own country he was in charge of a horse archery club and he trained people in horse archery. He has won competitions in both horse riding and archery... though I couldnt tell you if he has anything for horse archery.

I dont think he's really affiliated with a club or anything... I think its just a case of he has some land and a few horses and if someone asks he'll give a lesson or two. Anyway let me know if ya want some contact details. Id say he might be worth visiting, he might even have the facilities you would need and he'd more then likely back it 100% of the way... :)

    Hi Gokmen,

I want to ask you something, since it seems you know plenty about composite bows :)
I have a biocomposite turkish bow from Grozer. It's 55# at 28 inch.
I have arrows with a spine of 75-80 made of northern pine.
The question is: My arrows keep on breaking and I don't know what the problem is. Is it the spine? or the type of wood the arrows are made of?
I was wondering what kind of wood the Ottoman turks used for their arrows?

Maybe you can help me with this :)

    Kind regards,

    Gallego

    Hi Gokmen.

The folks at flybow in Mayo (www.flybow.de) may be able to help you here as well.

    Hi Gallego

the breakage of the arrows can have different reasons.

    -The target is too hard
-The arrow fishtails and hits the target in a wrong angle.
-The fishtailing again can have various reasons e.g. wrong release, wrong arrow set up etc.
-The target is not 90 degrees to you but looking a bit upwards or to the side.

The best is to have a video to see the release..
I shoot usually 55-75 lbs indoors and my arrows dont break. I also have them tapered towards the ends with long fletchings a la Ottoman style. Your arrows shouldnt break.
The Ottomans used pine which they dried for years but that's another story.

    Do you use thumb release?
Grozer's hybrids are pretty fast, I like them.
    cheers

    Gokmen
