Hey, Im going on J-1 next summer(2011) and would like some advice!
There are two of us going, me and the boyf, and I would like to know if anyone has gone anywhere different or is planning for somewhere different!
I read on another thread that colorado has rafting places where they train u and then work there for the summer. Something cool like that would be brill..
Nightlife doesnt have to be fantastic or anything because Im not the biggest drinker. I might go out twice a week maybe!
I would love to be beside the beach but I dont mind if its not!
I have read up about the big cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston, and also like the look of Ocean city and places on the jersey shore, but I would like to hear different stories..
How about texas or salt lake city, or clearwater in florida...
I know its not till next year but Im a freak on researching things!
    Any ideas??

since you have over a year to prepare - why not train now to become a scuba instructor ...and goto Hawaii spending your days taking groups of people snorkling/scuba....swimming with sharks, turtles...exploring the reef and general marine life over there.

EDIT: I did a scuba course in Kerry (€450) scregann pier or something like that (waterworld is the name of the place)...it takes about a week -and you are qualified to dive... but then you have to go out a couple of other times to become an instructor..... I plan on going to Hawaii this year with the missus to see the volcano's and photo the sharks, turtles and fish....looks amazing from what I've seen online.

Oh ... best price I could find for other scuba courses varied from €650-€750...thats why I went with waterworld.

Never did any of the J1's but have spent a lot of time in the US. Austin, Texas is a really cool city. It's a college town so there's a pretty young vibe about the city. With the exception of San Antonio most of the other big cities aren't that great. Also you mentioned Colorado which is probably my favorite state. Such diverse landscape and the summer storms are cool.

Salt lake city is boring. Didn't really like it that much. Actually wasn't mad about anywhere in Utah. And clearwater is kinda quiet. Not overly much in the place other than resorts.

Some of my favorite places over there would be Athens or Savannah in Georgia, Burlington in Vermont, Madison in Wisconsin or Lawrence in Kansas. Mostly student towns but probably better craic during the college year though.

I spent my two visas in Alaska. Many people go to the obvious spots because that is where their friends or "most people" are going. It's a shame because there are so many great places people could go if they were willing to break out of sheep mode for a while.

My advice would be to really do some research and find somewhere you and your boyfriend would really like and go for it regardless of what the rest of the gang or college is doing. Your experience may be all the more special for it.

What was alaska like in terms of accom, jobs etc??
Has anyone gone to the north west on a J1 before? Places like Seattle or Portland?
