Yes, I've had TMJ disorder, still get the odd twinge but I can manage it.

It's usually more of a dental thing though, as in usually caused by dental problems such as the bite changing or being disturbed. Mine started after having 2 ill-fitting crowns mess up my bite for a couple of weeks. So you might do better with this on the dental forum. :) Should be a few threads there too you might find helpful.

Anyway, I got this book... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1572241268/ref=oss_product

It has some great exercises which helped me.

Any questions, just ask me, be happy to help if I can. :)

I've had this since I was born, following a forceps injury during delivery.

It comes and goes and was particularly bad in my early teens but has been under control in recent times, thankfully.

For prevention, I have a sort of gum-shield type thing for my bottom teeth that I wear at night - it was made specially from a mould. I used to do exercises but not much anymore - there is one where you hold your tongue touching the roof of your mouth and then open your mouth.

When it displaces/locks I have found over the years that the only thing to do is take a pain killer and try to relax completely and not panic as I think the tense muscles make it much worse. Eventually it just goes back in to place.

It's a nightmare I know - good luck with it!

went to the dentist yesterday! he told me that it was probably stress due to very busy masters course in college! he explained to me what different muscles where being affected and how i can massage the muscles to relieve the pain! also told me i need to be more aware of when i'm clenching/grinding my teeth so i can take a time out to relax! tried it today and it kinda worked! it'll definately take time to get used to it but i'll do anything at this stage if it helps :)

Sorry to hijack this thread but was about to post something similar. Think I have developed TMJ, started getting pains in my jaw last Saturday (have no idea what I did to start it - have a overbite but its never given me bother before) and its spread into my ears and have splitting headaches in my temples. I'm finding it painful to talk, eat, laugh even smile!! I've being taking nurofen to try and kill the pain but its not improving. Does it go away on its own do you know or would I need to see a Doctor about it? Also would I need to go to a doctor/dentist first to outrule any other causes or should I head straight for a dentist?

the last person i saw that came in with pain associated with TMJ as told by her GP had an impacted wisdom tooth. i'd recommend a visit to your dentist to make sure.

    Hi Friend,
I have not suffered form TMJ but I know some people who were suffering form this disease. It is very painful. I can suggest you a site where you can get solution for your problem. It is TMJ REMEDIES. I hope you will get the desired result and you will be well very soon.

    Danger...shill alert....
So you signed up to boards.ie solely to post a link to a website selling products for TMJD (the D is for disorder, TMJ is the the joints). Now you never had it or used these products but a friend did. I declare shenanigans
