Should drug addicts be paid to be sterilised?

Yes it's a Daily Mail article, but this is a real initiative in America that's hoping to gain traction in the UK. Article link is below:

Basically Barbara Harris pays drug addicts to either be sterilised or fitted with a contraceptive implant - her reasoning is that "'These women made a conscious choice at one point in their lives to do drugs; these babies did not get offered that choice. Nobody has the right to force their drug addiction on an innocent child.'

I think it will absolutely drive a lot of far-left people up the wrong way but I personally think it's an apolitical, tough but common sense approach. I myself have zero empathy for drug addicts, just their children and relatives - sounds like a win-win IMO

I don't know about sterilised but it wouldn't be a bad idea to give them implants.

Taking advantage of people off there head on drugs, is hardly a good thing. The steralizations of any group of people is to put it simply deeply disturbing.

What if they get there act together, and then want to have children. Well, they can't due to some ass hat sterlizing them, when they weren't in there right mind.

why stop at drug addicts .... why not make all poor people sterile - this will irradicate all poor people.

- and criminals , lets sterilise all repeat criminals - they are only sponging off society and breed more criminals....sterilise them and we'd have less crime.

Just FYI, I've actually tried to comfort babies coming off Heroin, so I know how horrible it is. I've also seen people who were addicted to drugs come off it and get their act together - one chap I know is actually a (very good) addiction counsellor.

Whatever about a contraceptive implant or temporary shot, forced sterilisation is barbaric, and borne out of a believe that the one doing the sterilising is, somehow, superior to the other person.

So if you have zero empathy for drug addicts then you wouldn't support destoying society for the sake of stopping a few people from becoming addicts, right?

I don't at all condone the taking of any drug while pregnant (as it will have long term consequences on the baby). But the effects of cocaine and heroin on a developing fetus aren't nearly as bad as those of alcohol.

The whole crack baby thing is now recognised as a myth , although obviously taking a drug that so strongly affects your reward system is going to have serious long term consequences on your child's reward system. The point is it's not as devestating as fetal alcohol syndrome. If you really want to save babies the money would be better spent giving contraceptives to chronic alcoholics.

This an interesting post, I did wonder which 'drugs' they were referring to, it's not that clear from the article.

Is this just for illegal drugs or are legal drugs included?
Alcoholics ruin alot of families so maybe they should be sterilized aswell?

Two very good points, it's easy to forget about alcohol addiction.
