cheezuz we need to get a pint together. As well as landcruisers, rocks are a pet favorite of mine.

stick up a clear picture with a coin or measure tape for scale. clear enough to see the particals if possible. and i'll have a go. also tell me where you found and i deduce what you have.

    i have the pics

    june2010126.jpg

    june2010123.jpg

    it weighed close to 10kgs

i found it about 6 feet below the surface while digging out a foundation(about 4 feet below the site level+2 foot of topsoil stripped before that)

will swap for old toyota, only messing.
i might venture into UCC with it and have it looked at

I'm going to guess it's a bit lump of chert.

perhaps a proper geologist would know what this is straight away but i don't. Can you clean off the orangey stuff? Is that just muck or is it rust? If it's rust it obviously hints at a large iron component in the rock. Can you give us a closer look at the surface of the rock? It doesn't look like a sedimentary rock but i'd like a closer look at the granularity. Also, does a knife mark it?

10kg, interesting, I'd love to know the volume ,can't really estimate from here. (to get the density)

that overflow can thing looks like interesting
i will do it later on today

the rust colour stuff will not come off,i soaked the stone a few months back to clean it but it all stayed stuck.

i will take better pics later

    this is fun

well i dont think its of the football origin.

    sounds pretty dense.

ive never seen "bog iron" in the flesh but this is what it may be.
    magnesium nodule is another.

try a magnet on it on various places, does it stick?

    regards
    Sean

the magnet does not stick to it

i was going to take it to the "we buy any gold" people and make a few bob

Looks Fine grained, possibly siltstone. If it was from cork, as your location is, most likely part of the Old Red Sandstone of the Devonian time period which is widespread down there. Deposited by braided river systems if i remember correctly. Slow cook for three hours and add salt to taste

    Enjoy!
