If you need tires and can't afford new ones they are certainly better than baldies, for a start they are legal. Everysecond hand car you buy has similar tyres on, which folks on the high horse forget.

Are you crazy? I don't understand people with this mentality. Considering those 4 hand-sized patches of rubber are the only thing keeping 1 - 2 tonnes of metal on the road, they are the ONLY thing you should not skimp on on a car.

New tyres will last you longer too, so you won't have this same issue a year down the line.

what about general servicing ? brake components ? etc etc etc
2nd hand tyres are legal and far better than baldies which are all too common a site these days, particularly on high end cars a few years old.

If you get premium brands that are partworn they should be good for the guts of ten thousand miles if you are not a foot to the floor merchant. They are not the devils work folks make them out to be. Premium brand part worns are far better than lots of budget tyre muck available, only thing is they're nearly as dear.

Put it this way, when you buy a used car do u change all four tyres??
I know i dont, so in fact there is no difference. Just get them checked over very carefully, because if they aint the best and u buy them can u afford to make that mistake again??

Also some budget tyres are good if you aint doing alot of high speed.

I think the only difference between a second hand tyre and a new one is the price and how long they last.

The only other thing I suppose is the condition of the tyre. If it's got lots of cracks on it or something like that. Generally if it looks like a piece of sh*t it probably is. You dont have to worry about that when buying a new tyre.

But with buying a new or second hand tyre you could end up with a bad quality one or a chinese knock off.

Tyres must have an E or something on them now, right? Another thing to watch out for. The NCT wants E's on the tyres.

That may be so but it's always gonna be a gamble as to how they were treated in their previous life that would put me off ever buying a set.

Make sure the tyres have a e-mark on them.

It is a requirement throughout the EU that motor vehicles have e-marked tyres. E-marking applies to both new and retreaded tyres. An e-mark confirms that the tyre meets the minimum EU or International (UNECE) standard in relation to its dimensions, load and speed rating.

The 'E' mark consists of an 'E' or 'e' followed by a number included in a circle or a rectangle. The number denotes the government' which granted the approval. The number outside the circle or rectangle is the number of the type approval certificate issued for the tyre size and type.

An e-marked tyre will have been tested to ensure that the tyre has adequate tread depth and does not exhibit tread and ply separation when performing at its maximum design weight and speed.

You also need it for NCT.

you can get new 2 Kumho Solus tyres delivered from camskill.co.uk for 85. should be able to be fitted for about 110-115 for the pair.

average enough tyre, not performance oriented but certainly miles better than the terrible budget tyres available in the shops. Original equipment on Hyundais and Kias.

used tyres probably looking at about 50-60 fitted for 2.

There is an importer of used tyres around dublin. They seem to do this as their main business. I would buy them. The tyre size you need though should be available new relatively cheap for a middle of the road brand so in your case, new is probably the best best.
How much are you paying for tyres usually?

You should get be able to get a set of new ones for less than €250 fitted. Well worth the extra €75 / €50 if you can stretch to it.

There's a tyre centre close to where I work sells second hand tyres, good quality brands, contis etc for about €40 each for 205s, they were excellent but did seem to wear out quickly.

After years of buying new tyres and many many tires getting destroyed on our woeful roads, I tried used tyres a few months ago. Given I need ultra wide 265 to 285 width tyres, the pricing is extremely expensive new. Used tyres about 1/4th the price. So far, totally fine, the only issue is availability of tyres in this size. I wouldnt go putting on tyres with less than 5mm thread, so the usage on the ones I got was minimal.

I dont consider used tyres skimping, eg one could buy a premium brand slightly used tyre for much less than the price of a budget Chinese tyre. IMO the new Budget tyre is skimping, a used high quality part is still high quality, cheap parts will always be just that.
