Holiday suggestions with a one year old

So thought I'd give this a try
Was wondering if anybody had holiday suggestions for first summer holiday with a one year old. Probably in Mid June
She'll be one in May and will probably be tottering around as she is nearly walking.
I'm not certain that a sun type holiday will work as we'd probably spend all our time running around after her, although I'm not certain of that.
Against Ireland is the weather and cost
Sightseeing is probably a no no as the little one will have no interest.

My wife wants to get away somewhere where somebody will clean up after us and where we won't have to be making dinner or food.

    Any suggestions?

We're going to the Isle of Wight :) But thats because I'm from there and we're visiting family.

Can highly recommend it though. Weather will be nice but not too hot. Plenty of things to do aimed at families!

I went to Jersey a couple of years ago with a family that I babysat for. They had 2 kids (2 and a half and 14 months) Weather was nice but not too hot. plenty of beaches and other things to keep the kids entertained

We're in the same situation, would love to take the little man away for a few days but a little apprehensive about flying etc, have to say I'd never thought to the Isle of Wight or Jersey and feel a bit silly now, went to the Isle of Man a while back and loved it.

    thanks all

I'm not so worried about travel, we went to visit a sister of mine in France and she was fine on the flight
Its more that I have no idea what we will be able to do with her on hols. Its great at home; she plays with her toys, crawls around, pulls the dogs tail, opens the presses, shouts at my wife....:D

When we are away she won't have all her toys, will have no dog and won't have a house to be going around. She's at the age where after a short while she is sick of being in her buggy, and sick of sitting in a high chair so I can't see afternoons spent going for long walks, or evenings spent eating out.
I suppose I'm worried that she's too young to be in and out of the pool, playing games and so on with the result that I'm concerned that we'd be better off at home.
My wife understandably wants away from home for a break.

Were taking our little girl to spain in june for a week. She will be 17 months. Another 2 couples, one of which has a 5 yr old girl are also coming. My freidn took there 8 month old away recently and said they had no problems. I think you should be fine

Just remember to get their passport sorted if they dont already have one because of the backlog. We applied 3 weeks ago via an post and have heard nothing yet.

We're heading to Berlin with our 9 month old. We'll probably rent a holiday apartment or stay at the Suitehotel as it's handy to have access to a kitchen. Berlin's great for buggy-friendliness (it's flat and has accessible transport) and most neighbourhoods have free play areas for young kids. Cafes and restaurants are very child friendly (especially in Prenzlauerberg in the East which is the only part of Germany experiencing a baby boom). There are also lots of lakes to go swimming in, beach bars along the Spree, everywhere is non-drinker-friendly too so one of ye can be the buggy driver while the other chills. The weather is usually decent from the end of May - dry and not too hot (18-25 °C).

Or head for a hotel break in Ireland or the UK and bring the dog...

If she loves water anywhere with a pool will do.

Majorca is fantastic for kids and if you get a hotel with little water slides its great. She might also like the kids evening entertainment and bob along to it.

hotel chain viva are great for families

we did a haven holiday to devon which we really enjoyed was even better than disney world florida.... we traveled all over devon, somerset and cornwall.

following on what other posters have said...

Consider going somewhere you can take the ferry. From what friends have said it makes packing and travelling with children a lot easier - no restrictions on how much you can bring so toys and snacks can all be packed and more relaxing that flying.

I've heard great things about centerparcs and haven holidays and there are little clubs and activities for even little tots.

The south of England gets lovely weather and pubs and restaurants along the coast tend to be very family friendly.

What about the Haven resorts in the UK they have everything you need and are very child/family orientated. I'm seriously considering bringing my little one here for her first holiday.
Another option I considered was maybe Butlins in Wales.

We were away this weekend and had an interesting time with madam
She is a great baby but was really bored sitting in her baby chair in a restaurant, really brought home to us how a holiday could turn out.
Don't think going away foreign will be a great idea, we might try England or Scotland rent a house or apartment for a few days . Saving that it will be home in Ireland

Hello I'm new to BOARDS.IE but I'm really looking for some help.:)

We are looking to holiday this summer (August 2011) with three children, will be 10, 9 and 17 months.

We have had lots of holidays in Ireland (all great) but we're looking for something a little further afield but in our budget. Sun holidays are crazy and in the region of 2,200 - 2,700 and it's just way off for us. Plus I think difficult with a 17 month old.

Can anyone advise us? Please - all suggestions welcome :p

We went to Praia da Rocha last Summer and it was great for families.. loads of people with small children.. I was pregnant so we weren't looking for a mad drinking holiday obviously.. it has loads to do for kids and lots of lovely restaurants and it's not full of teenagers out on the p1ss like most other resorts I've been to..

We're going back there this year with our little fella.. it's not too long of a flight either.. about 2 and a quarter hours give or take..

We having our first family holiday this year. 1 year old and will be 4 year old. Getting the ferry to France. We are going to be staying in a camp site near the fantastic Saint Mount Michel. Great towns and beaches, not hot. Handy having the car and for us. Will be nice to sit out in the evening with a bottle of wine while kids sleep. Camp site well equiped. But you want to be waited on and there are some superb hotels and b&bs in the area.
