Apologies. That link doesn't work if you are not a facebook user.

Anyway, due to recent aggressive tactics by customs in Donegal, a group of individuals have set up a forum and are lobbying politicians on their stance on VRT and the free movement of goods etc.

Membership has quadrupeled in a week.

A stupid Facebook forum is not going to make the slightest bit of difference to this....

    when will people learn

There is nothing illegal or intrinsically "wrong" with VRT. End of.

There was a thread on this very recently already.

I think the general consensus was that a facebook group has as much clout as a letter drafted by a 2 year old.

The way I see it, the government is hemorrhaging money if they removed VRT you can be damn sure they'll take it off us some other way. Except instead of taxing people importing cars they'd hit everyone.

People will just join the group because its there and a click away. How many of these members do you think would actually get off their a**es and do something?

There's Facebook campaigns to eliminate cancer too, however I reckon the cure for cancer is more likely to come from a major medical break-through from doctors and bioligists rather than Facebook. I could be wrong though! :D

"oh no... the world is going to end... I better start a Facebook campaign to save it... only Facebook can save us now!"
    Followed by:
"Ahhh my eyes! Facebook does nothing!"

Facebook groups only serves one purpose, to massage the ego of the creator.
It's not like the government is gonna roll over for a FB group.

Came across this forum recently. See what you think. It is a group campaigning to abolish VRT.

Thats grand, but you can take a European standard rate of Income tax along with that ;)

All the advice given on that facebook page is wrong. They advise you to ignore the gardaí and customs officers and the law in general and everything will be ok.

    :D

I'd love to see how that would go down at a customs checkpoint

If VRT wasn't abolished when the State was flush with revenue, there is no point ranting about it when there a real danger of the government going bust.

if some people don't want to pay vrt, let them believe that nothing will happen.
    Ignorance is bliss..

But it might't be so blissful when they find themselves walking away from a checkpoint after their car being seized.

They can then sit at home and complain about the gardai and customs.

Generally, people will become fans of anything, and panic about everything on facebook. Every week there's a new group set up called "No, I will not pay [insert random amount of money] to use Facebook from [insert random date]", and everyone falls for it hook line, and sinker.

Then there's the ones that really grate "This [day/week/month] is [insert random awareness campaign here, cancer, aids, ugly people] awareness [day/week/month]. Most/93%/94% of people won't post this to their walls, will you be one of the few who will change your status for one hour?"

They're the equivilant of the stupid chain mails we used to get sent to our inboxes years ago ... Bill Gates will be monitoring the worlds emails and will give 10 dollars for every 20 people you forward this to.

And _thats_ why it's gaining popularity, because even though people are cleverer today with email, they're morons on FB and will follow anything, and do anything that a status update/group asks. Just because its on tinternet, doesn't mean it's true. At least its a step up from Bebo.
