Research prior to purchase ?? Doubt they will TBH
    But good luck !

What are you getting per tank ?

i did some research :) though different driving styles have different mpg :)

300 miles per tank...60 quid to fill the tank

Urban driving? Are you driving it hard?

Why would they take a car back just if there is no fault with it bar you not liking a certain aspect of it? It has already cost them money dealing with you. If they did want to take it back expect a very low offer

extra urban driving :) mmm depends how fast i want to get to a place :) sometimes i drive it hard sometimes i cruise slow lol

I would say it depends on how low the mpg is, if its exceptionally low, you might have a case, if its just slightly lower than a similar model they might say its your driving, how low we talking about here.

If I was buying a second hand car, Id want it in writing that the car gives a reasonable if not a specific mpg, also what was included in a warranty (Id say everything in a 3 month period, maybe lesser further on)

i dont wanna take it back i like it hehe...but the way it eats fuel i would rather think of re selling it straight away and try getting the diesel version... as far as i know most ppl get 400 miles out of the tank (58L in the tank)

There's no obligation for them to take it back to be honest, your decision represents a change of mind and a lack of research of what you wanted. If there's different models then you should have made 100% sure you got the one you wanted.

Well thats your answer. If you drive in any way hard you will reduce your average fuel consumption. Hammering it on a couple of motorway slip roads for example can negate carful driving for the rest of the tank.

My dads got a newer shape 2 litre petrol Mondeo that does mostly town driving and thats averaging 32mpg at the moment driven reasonable carefully

A useless statistic, without mentioning the size of the tank.

(Why do people persist with saying miles per (mythical) tank?)

If you read the entire thread....which isnt exactly long....you'd see in post #9 he says its a 58L tank!!!

    300 miles to €60 petrol?

Assuming petrol is €1.33, thats 45 litres, or 10 gallons, which is 30mpg.

@ OP, This is fine for a 1.8 petrol thats only doing lots of start-stop driving, how many miles of that 300 are you cruising at 90-100kph? (This is the most economical speed)

If you are doing start/stop driving (in traffic) 70% of your time and 30% on motorway driving @ 120kph, thats all I would expect of a 1.8 petrol.
(A diesel will do around 40-45mpg under these conditions)

    You have 2 choices:
-sell it back to the garage (or privately) at a loss or
-take the hit and keep it. Also change your driving style.

True, but if you read my post you will not find me asking what size it is!

In any event, 58litres may be the capacity of the tank but nobody drives from brim-full to empty. Quoting miles/km per tank is a useless statistic.

Interesting to see someone complaining about fuel consumption, yet doesn't seem to know what the actual consumption is.

SO. Work out the actual consumption, in MPG, or L/100km, or km/litre, and compare with published figures.

Then one can see if the car has excessive consumption, or not.

That 1.8 engine is a bit of an enigma.
It's has the performance of the 1.6 with fuel consumption of the 2.0.

I get similar figures from my 2.0ST focus and I'd be pushing it on.
A lot of posts like this at the mo, suggest it's more to do with the price of petrol?
Carbon tax still to come......, thanks John.

It's no faster that the 1.6 with economy to match the 2.0.
yeah well the fact is that its a fat piece of metal - small mpg/not as fast :(
