Which card in the uk?

I want to use my card in the UK.

Should i use my credit card or debit card? (both aib)
Also should I pay in store or use an ATM?

I have used my debit card at the atm and it costs 1.27 at a relatively good exchange rate. I have also used the credit card (pay in full each month by direct debit) to pay for goods in store, there did not seem to be a charge and the exchange rate was approximately similar to the one I get with my debit card from an ATM (not sure of the exact rate on the day, so may have just been a good day..)

Basically I want to know is there an accepted wisdom on which method is best; debitC-atm, debitC-shop, creditC=atm or creditC-shop?

Thank you, and apologies if this make no sense..
