Rail Bookie

I have been working for a large chain bookie now for the last two years but I would like to start working at the rails on course. It seems a lot more exciting and dare I say more glamorous than taking bets off losers betting on cartoons.

I’m sure that there are some people on this site that experience in this area so I would just like to ask how they managed to get involved in this area in the first place and how they enjoyed it?

I would like to start working with someone who has a lot of experience in this environment – I wouldn’t dream of starting up myself.

Before anyone says it, I of course realise that this isn’t the best time to get into this business but I would like to get some info all the same.

A mate of mine does it in the Munster courses and p2ps as well. He reckons half of them are nearly broke. He is probably exagerating a bit but it's a lot tougher now because of the daily expenses that have to be paid and the competition from exchanges. Money turnover is down also. I wouldn't fancy it now anyway the way he is talking.

Oh I find it hard to believe that half of them bookies are broke.

I'd say the hardest part of starting up would be getting the bad pitches - far away from the madding crowd. Surely if you had a good pitch, you'd have a good turnover and if you manage your book conservatively, you'd be making more than a tidy living. I bet the guys in trouble are taking on some of these horses and going into races with big liabilty horses.....they might as well be punters themselves.

I reckon the big hitters in Ireland still go on course to bet, not to the exchanges.

Stick to getting paid by your large firm , I would think more than half are broke and most of them there to collect debts from guys who bet with them over the phone
