Very excited to see this Techno legend this coming friday in Manchester, has anyone seen him lately?

Anyone worth their salt into Techno has to be into Saunderson:)

I was hooked on this track of his for a while:

I recently watched Hi Tech Soul, where he claimed that he had sold 8 million records....
    I doubt it somehow

I would say he has actually when you consider the popularity of Inner City and all his other releases.:)

I actually wouldn't be too surprised!

Especially if you count how many compilations etc his stuff appeared on (and i'd say he was probably counting them too).

jonny, there's a place for being nostalgic and there's a place for getting with reality.
In nostalgia terms, saunderson's a fantastic dj. In reality, he's a washed up has-been who's not capable of playing good music any more. A legend, yes absolutely. A good dj, no absolutely not. At that price, you wont be too upset, but it'd be a waste of time going, I reckon.

And that's coming from someone who treasures (and regularly plays) e-dancer and inner city etc tracks.

and who are you to say that a legendary figure like kevin Saunderson is "washed up"

What facts are you basing your comments on, this is nothing to do with "nostalgia" as i believe he's playing mostly new stuff anwyay.

Time to get real yourself my friend:eek:

Maybe the new stuff he's playing just isn't very good?

    A)
Who am I to say he's "washed up". I'm someone who buys music and goes clubbing regularly. Co-incedentally my opinion was the same as others on here. Equally co-incidentally I've heard him a few times in the last few years and he has consistently disappointed.
    B)
I'm basing my comments on having seen him play. Also, basing them on the fact (you need facts?) that he's re-releasing all his old stuff and doing constant tours just to pay back money he owes Sony for a botched record deal.
    C)
This has nothing to do with nostalgia or being "ultra modern" or whatever. His sets have gone to **** completely. This isn't a dig at you. However, your actual defense of Saunderson owes all to his "legendary" status. Your stated reasons for wanting to see him have nothing to do with anything he's done in the last decade. Produce a set by him that's any way good, from the last 5 years, by all means.

You might believe what you want, but having seen him play plenty of times, he's a parody of his former self. Crappy electro house, infused with old classics like "pennies from heaven" and "spastik" time and again.

This has nothing to do with what you're into. You wrote:

I've seen him lately. I pay to hear a lot of techno and my opinion is that Saunderson's gone to ****. Not sure what your argument with that actually is.

By all means go to the gig, then come back and tell us we were all wrong. I was just offering my opinion, based on having made the mistake of going to see him enough times now.

No probs point taken, can i ask why if he was that bad you've seen him several times in the last few years?

I seen Sasha a few years ago and thought he was dreadful and have not seen him again since, ive heard some of his sets recently and am still not impressed, each to their own, i hope he doesn't play electro house or ill be dissapointed, im expecting to hear Techno of course nothing wrong with including some classics.

If Saunderson does owe money and is broke that's of no concern to me, im going to hear music...ill report back after the weekend.

i downloaded at saunderson set from livesets last night, was from 2008, and just as hans said, it was just full of **** electro house mixed in with some old school house/techno, i still think johnny will think it one of the sets of the year and i look forward to his review.

To be honest I don't know why I paid to hear him over and over. Something about a fool not learning from his past mistakes....

Keep it civil please - debate away as to whether Kevin Saunderson is greatest DJ ever or an aging old fart playing off his detroit name, just do it without the insults!

Everyone to their own mate, personally if i went to see a DJ and he was poor i wouldn't be going to see him again for quite sometime!

You do have a point though about nostalgia and a lot us myself included are "guilty" of it, i went to see Andrew Weatherall @ the Back to Basics 18th birthday (great nite overall though) last year expecting big things but was dreadful and played weird abstract sh*t and he used to be one of my fav DJ's back in the day so sometimes you do get let down and let nostalgia cloud your judgement, i just assumed from your post you might have had something against Saunderson but you do make a valid point and i respect it unlike that muppet Brian C go away this thread if you've nothing constructive to add.

hans aus dtschl ill report back with an honest view after the event:)

i have something contructive to say, i think the music you like is terrible therefore you will probably enjoy a terrible kevin saunderson dj set, no need for the personal insults jonny, your taste in music doesnt reflect on you as a person so dont take it to heart, you could be sound, regardless of the type of music your into, so please lay off the personal insults and lets get back on track here, the discussion is about whether saunderson is any use these days or not and the general consensus is that he is not

i couldn't care less what you think about me or what music i like to, keep your opinions to yourself, you don't see me hijacking your threads saying "your music is s**t" do you, if you think this DJ is s**t fair enough don't start saying the same about me (as if you actually know every bit of music im into anyway)

mods, please lock this thread if theres any more posts like this, thanks

To add to all this, I saw DJ Stingray, Moodyman and Shake Shakir on Saturday night, doing their "urban tribe" thing and thought it was dire.

I've a lot of nostalgia-influenced skeletons in the closet tbh. Saunderson's only the tip of the iceberg for me.

Saw Weatherall at twisted pepper not so long ago, thought he played a blinder of a set, normally i dont enjoy sweaty nights in that basement but i think hes one of the djs that really stood out for me.

I thought Kevin Saunderson was immense, no electro house as was suggested and no old skool either (unless you wanna count some remixes of classic acid tracks)

I'm actually delighted i went, the warm up DJ's too were excellent particulary the guy on before Saunderson who played some slamming Techno.

KS came on about 1.50am first few tracks he played were spacey type techno, as his set went on he upped the tempo, pure detroit techno (the techno purists would've loved it)the crowd were brilliant and Moho Live is a great little venue, small dark and dingy, id estimate that 80% of the crowd would've been in their 20's too which dispells the myth that only us older clubbers were into legends like KS who's mixing too i may add was of a high quality, the biggest cheer of the nite was when he dropped remixes of some classic Acid House tracks, pretty good remixes too i thought, come 4am and he wanted to play on but this particular club only has a licence until 4am so had to end it there but brilliant atmosphere.

I'm currently uploading video's to YouTube i shot on my phone, here are some photos i took.

Great nite was had, respect to the promoters and of course the man like KS.
