iPhone constantly crashing-Hardware or Software??

My iPhone is constantly crashing and Im wondering could it be a hardware fault or a software fault (Im running 3.1.3).

In the middle of doing things it would just crash and the phone will restart. Sometimes it will be in the middle of booting up after crashing and will crash again, and will be in loop. The only way to resolve it is to restore it through iTunes. Today I pressed the lock button to check the time and it crashed, it restarted and a few mins later I checked the time again and it did the very same thing. It must of crashed about 5 times in a row.

Im just wondering could this be a simple software fault, or would it be a fault in the hardware?

Could be either. When you are restoring, are you restoring from backup or as a new phone?

As a new phone. I must of restored it about 20 times at this stage, no joke.

If you have restored it like that, to factory settings and problems persist, definitely a hardware fault, contact apple.

Its an iPhone 3G, and I bought it second hand on Adverts so no warranty. Any chance it could be a battery problem? It's the only part if the phone I could replace myself. :D
