Trouble Tuning RTE, TV3 etc

I recently got a small 16" LCD TV (make: Alba LCDW16HDF) and I'm having trouble picking up any channels.

There are two UPC cables in my wall. One I use for my internet (supplied by UPC/Chorus NTL). The other had a block on it, which I took off to hook up the TV. I did so but when I try both automatically and manually tuning channels (both digital and analogue) I can't pick up any of the basic channels. The best I've gotten is a really fuzzy Discovery Channel. The weird thing is I haven't even found a poor signal for RTE, RTE2 etc.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for any and all comments. This is really annoying - I just want to watch the news.

PS I've tried rabbit ears but the reception is horrific and unwatchable. I've also checked the country setting etc and all that seems ok.

Sounds to me like your TV is a UK model without a VHF tuner. The reason you're getting Discovery is that UPC duplicate Discovery, Channel 4 and E4 on UHF in most areas in Dublin. If this is the case then you'd have to use an old video recorder with a VHF tuner to change channels.

No, I don't have a UPC subscription. But how can they block me from getting the basic, free channels that I pay for with my TV licence?

So does that mean if I unhook my internet from the cable and use this as my connection to the TV I should be able to get a signal?

the same way sky block you.. disconnection

rte/tv3/tg4 will be available via a tv aerial, (internal or external)

You are not entitled to anything on a UPC cable if you do not have a sub with them. Get a UHF aerial, mount it on your roof or in the attic space, and get RTE/TV3/TG4 off air. That's what your license entitles you to.
