Snooker Trivia Questions

A thread for trivia questions might work?

    Q. Who knocked a then 16 year old Ronnie O'Sullivan out of the 1992 UK Championship? Hint: he was 59 at the time and had bad eyesight (cateracts)

    Perhaps an easier question:

    Q. Name the uncle and nephew professional snooker players, one of which served time for smuggling canabis, the other was banned for match fixing

Wasn't Steady Eddie, although he in his own right could be the answer to a dozen trivia questions

Correct on the Franciscos, Silvinio the uncle who did the time and Francisco who was banned

    Q. Who was Jimmy White's co-hustler in the snooker clubs of London when they were teenagers?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,629 ✭✭✭zack01

The player who did Ronnie is killing me,
a guess is John Spencer or maybe Rex Williams?

The Francisco's were Silvino and Peter.

Silvino will be remembered for two things
    (1)
Beating Kirk Stevens in the final of the British Open, I think it was 1985, Stevens was outed as being high as a kite on cocaine after the final by Francisco, his career sadly went downhill after that and is now back in Canada playing pool.
    (2)
Silvino was arrested in the mid nineties at Dover trying to smuggle drugs into the UK in his car.

Peter on the other hand was found guilty of match fixing in a first round tie against Jimmy White at the world c'ships, I can recall it as if it was yesterday, it was so obvious he was throwing the match with the balls he was missing.
He was banned after a hearing.

Great idea for a thread, let me think up a few good ones for you.

    Oh forgot one,
Tony Meo was Jimmy's partner in crime.

    Love it!!

The Silver Fox was David Taylor, he actually played in the qualifiers for this years world c'ships.

I think Joe Johnsons price was 150/1.

The Austrailian Open was held in Hong Kong.

I have no idea of the name given to the fight!!

    Ken's sons name is Christian.

The First Snooker World Cup held overseas in Thailand featured what two teams in the final?

Who was the very public figure who held the position of non executive president of the then governing body the WPBSA in the late nineties before finding himself in prison for perjury?

Where did Dave Harold win his only ranking event?

Who did Ronnie O' Sullivan compile his 5 minute max against in the crucible?

Dennis Taylor won his only two ranking events in the 1984-1985 season, the world title of course was one, what was the other?

Who did Steve Davis beat to win his first world title?

    Well done!

The only won you missed out on was the snooker world cup.
It was in 1996 between Scotland captained by Stephen Hendry and the Rep of Ireland captained by Ken Doherty, Scotland won 10-6.

Logging off for the night, will hit you with a few more tomorrow.

2000 Nations Cup, watched it live, playing against Dennis Taylor shortly before he retired. He had his second a matter of weeks at the Irish Masters @ Goffs. (Watched that one live too) :)

Not a clue, the miss rule came in in the early 90's IIRC, so maybe Hendry vs White?

    Lada Classic (1982 IIRC)

Answer: It was Cliff Wilson. A great character, he only turned professional at the age of 45, I think his nickname was "The Demon Potter" but I might have imagined that. He died two years after beating Ronnie, his obituary is here

Correct, a fellow left hander. He was the youngest known player to make a 147 when he made one at, I think, 17.

    Q. Which player made back-to-back 147s in an exhibition match?

I'm not sure of the answer to this one but think it happened:

    Q. Which player won a professional tournament without scoring a break over 50?

    Q. Name the one tournament Willie Thorne won as a professional

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,629 ✭✭✭zack01

Ken's two appearances in the Grand Prix final were
1992 lost to Jimmy White 10-9 in the Rothmans
1993 lost to Peter Ebdon 9-6 in the Skoda

The first time the three miss rule decided a match was in the 1992 Irish Masters at Goffs when in their second round match tied at 4-4 Steve Davis missed the reds three times and handed the match to Ken Doherty.

Hearns group of players were called Matchroom Snooker and correct Jimmy White was the seventh player.

    Ithaca,

There could be many players who have made back to back 147's, i myself have seen it done twice in exhibitions,i saw Peter Ebdon do it in an exhibition in London and i also saw Stephen Hendry do it in an exhibition in Carlisle.

The player who won a tournament without scoring a break over 50, could that be Perrie Mans when he won the Benson & Hedges Masters?

Willie Thornes only ranking event win was The Mercantile Credit Classic (i think)

Peter Ebdon was the one I heard of, thought it was unique.

Perrie Mans is correct (I googled it to confirm)

Mercantile Credit Classic is correct (1985)

Terry Griffiths was the first i think, i'm sure i remember Murphy being the second so i dont think it's Johnson. Doubt Dott was a qualifier either so i'm can't work out a third one.

The Hollywood actor was Donald Sutherland.

The three qualifiers in order were
    1. Terry Griffiths
    2. Joe Johnson
    3. Shaun Murphy

    Here's a few tricky ones:

    1. What was the name of the tv quiz show hosted by Steve Davis in 1983?

2.In the 1982 world c'ships the oldest player met the youngest in
first round, can you name them?

3.Who was the first player to win the world title using a two piece cue?

4.'Snooker Plus' was an idea first moored by the great Joe Davis in the late '60's, it involved adding two extra colours to the 22 ball set, can you name the two colours?

5.What was Tony Knowles's only ranking tournament win?

    Purple (10 points) I think

The spotted extra balls got in the way of the white too much

    He sure was!

Joe Johnson qualified for the last 32 in the cruicble in 1986.
He came through the qualifying rounds which were held in the Redwood Lodge Hotel in Bristol.

His pre tournament price was 150/1

The following year because of his seeding as number one he again reached the final only to lose to Steve Davis.

What was the story back then? Was only top 8 that didnt have to qualify?
Or did Joe replace a seeded player for some reason, i think he was seeded 16 which of course made for a better draw than being an unseeded.

just thinking the question i was probably thinking of so was who were the only 2 unseeded players to have won!

Basically the way it worked then was the top 16 ranked players were automatically qualified to the first round proper, that is still the case today. The remaining 100 or so professional players were split into 16 groups were a round robin event took place with the top player earning his spot at the cruicble.

Joe Johnson was a qualifier and beat a very good former english champion Dave Martin in the first round, Johnson was in the same half as defending champion and number one seed Dennis Taylor but he was beaten in the first round by Mike Hallett who Johnson then beat on his way to the final and eventual win.

He still remains one of only three qualifiers to have won the world title, the others being Terry Griffiths and Shaun Murphy.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_World_Snooker_Championship#Qualifying

Wiki must be wrong so, they have him as 16th seed and Dave Martin as the qualifer. They even showed the last qualifing round scores at the end.
It's confusing as i said, last night on eurosport when Murphy was playing they said he was only the second qualifier after Griffiths to win and that Dott could be the third this year. I think Johnson was co-commentating as well. It's bloody confusing, i cant find anything else with full results

Strange one that, I have every programme for the worlds since 1982 and it has Johnson down as a qualifier!

Only one way to find out and that is to ask the oracle of snooker Phil Yates, I'm over in Sheffield and I'll make it my business to ask him, I'll post the answer asap.

When you think about it I can't remember Dave Martin being a top 16 player but as I said I'm going by the programme?

Any way I'll post the answer asap or if anyone else knows please tell us.

    1) John Spencer made a 147 in front of cameras but the cameras were switched off in the particular frame he made the maximum in. Money was that tight back in 1979 I think it was. Steve Davis made the first televised maximum with cameras fully rolling in the 1982 Lada classic. This is on you tube.

    2) Eddie Charlton carried the torch at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. I'm sure Eddie would love to see Neil Robertson another Melbourne resident in the Crucible final

    3) Was Ken Doherty the first to win the amateur and Professional titles.

Jerry Seinfeld, I checked that out with the boys in Sheffield at the weekend and I stand corrected, you are right, Joe Johnson was not a qualifier in Sheffield in '86, he played Englishman Dave Martin who was a qualifier in the first round.
Out of seven press men 5 were right, those included Clive Everton and Phil Yates.
So as I said you were right, I read the programme wrong.
Good job I wasn't your phone a friend!!

Only two players have achieved the feat, funny but Dott would gave been the third if he had won, strange seeing that he only won it on 2006.
