Decision Making Data - US Real Estate

    (This is specific to US Real Estate)

    Getting good financial market data was something that really frustrated me in the past. From financial advisors to other investors, many people were making claims about the market that baffled me as I didn't know whether they had formed an opinion based on a biased Sunday columnist, or true financial data.

    Good data should be the basis of our investment making decisions. Any serious investor (commercial or residential) will have a handle on core market data, via economic index and/or publications.

    Over time I've compiled some of these sources which I regard as being most useful. Access to some of these are fee based but most are openly access on the web.

    1. NAREIM - National Association of Real Estate Investment Managers
    www.nareim.org

    2.NCREIF - National Council of Real Estate Investment Fidiciaies.
    www.ncreif.com

    3.Bureau of Economic Analysis - BEA www.bea.gov/international/ii_web/timeseries7-2.cfm

    4.Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning -
    www.cmap.illinois.gov (only for Chicago but still very useful)

    5.McGraw-Hill Construction

    6.S&P/Case-Shiller U.S. -Index
