putting 02 prepaid mobile phone SIM into 02 contract 3G dongle

A friend of mine is cancelling her O2 contract for her 3G broadband dongle (Huawei).

I have a 3G prepaid 02 sim from a mobile phone I had lying around with a good amount of call credit on it.

I tried using the SIM in the dongle and it gets an IP address etc but doesn’t actually work.

To spice things up/ complicate things, I’m using it on my Ubuntu netbook, the only change I made was to change the settings when it detected the modem from “Ireland – O2 contract” to “Ireland – O2 prepaid”

Any ideas to get this working?

Modem is gone now again as she needs it for a couple of days but I’m kicking myself for not leaving it on “Ireland – O2 contract” setting and trying it off that. Or is it just the case that O2’s mobile phone 3G SIMS don’t work in 3G dongles

If you want I can just change the price plan on the sim to the Pre-pay broadband plan.

Hi Daryll, that's great :) I guess the prepay sim would work in the contract sim dongle without issue then (similar to a phone?) and would the credit remain on the account?

I take it I can phone O2 and get this changed over also? (SIM is at home so I don't have the number on me right now)

Sure you can call them if you like. 1747 is the pre-pay team. There will be no issue all, all it is a change of price plan and it will work fine. PM me your number if you want me to do it for you.
