Sometimes when I attempt to Safely Remove Hardware I get this message:

    cannot-stop-device.png

Anyone know a way of fixing this?

Hardware is a Maxtor external hd
    PC is Dell Dimension
    OS is Windows XP Home

There must be a process that use some file on your external hard disk.
Check processes with task manager. Try to kill something non-system and repeat the operation.

If you have the drive still open. That is if a window is open even with My Computer or the files you might have been copying across. Close them and then try again. It's a typical windows usb warning. Nothing serious.

as people said, there is another process using something on disk, explorer being open is a common one, but most likely another process on the machine locking something down.

i see this alot with my drive which has avi's on it, divX player decides to start in the background and hold onto one of the avi's. just a matter of killing the process in task manager.
