Hi guys, first time poster in this area of boards.

I've recently gotten into watching Martial Arts, Boxing etc etc.
Never really had the ''balls'' to do it.

Im 17, currently weigh about 54Kg. Not the biggest guy. I've wanted to get into Self Defence but not really sure about the way to go? Is it possibly to do 1 on 1 sessions with a teacher?Rather then in groups?

As it would be my first time I'd feel really crap and feel I would make a fool of myself. So I would prefer 1 on 1 sessions.

I do have a bit of a temper on me, so if I was to spar with somebody and they hit me good I would lose my temper fairly quickly. I'm hoping a Self Defence of some sort would help me forget about my temper.

    My main questions consist of:

    Do I weigh too light?
    Can I do 1 on 1 sessions with a teacher?Pref Male.
    Where should I start?

    Problems:
Im a smoker, but will be quitting in summer(I'm sure you's have heard that alot)
    Losing temper

    All help is greatly appricated

    Regards,

    Eoin.

As it would be my first time I'd feel really crap and feel I would make a fool of myself

everybody has a "first day" and any good club will have members who remember this and make you feel welcome Privates are good, but really classes are the way to go
    Where should I start?
when you say you gotten into watching martial arts, can you be a bit more specific?

If its (as I suspect) UFC, then a self defence class will not teach you what you've seen on the telly

Next, where abouts are you, we have posters on here from all over Ireland, who will be able to let you know whats available in your area
    Do I weigh too light?

Too light for what? If you want to compete, it will be in weight catagories
    Can I do 1 on 1 sessions with a teacher?Pref Male.

Most instructors will do 1 on 1 sessions, but group classes are cheaper, and you get to spar/train with a varity of abilities/weights etc
Im a smoker, but will be quitting in summer(I'm sure you's have heard that alot)

    why not quit now?
    Losing temper

This is probably the biggest issue in your post. Many martial arts purport to teach self control/discipline/good manners and many other things. Personaly I feel that martial arts should teach you how to fight. Any other result is an added bonus. With regards to your
if I was to spar with somebody and they hit me good I would lose my temper fairly quickly

this would be on you to control.

The reactions you might expect to get from this will be varied. If you were sparring with me, the first time you lost your temper I'd point it out to you, the next time, i just wouldn't train with you again

As an aside, if you decide to take up an ma that incorporates medium to heavey contact in their sparring, expect to get clipped :D

Thank you for the quick reply.

    I'm located in Stoneybatter,Dublin.

Well I watch UFC, but thats just more for aggression fighting then self defence technicques. I tend to watch boxing

Reason I don't want to quit smoking at this moment in time is I have my Leaving Cert coming up, and I don't really want the extra stress. So my plan is to become fit in summer.

Me losing my temper has become alot more controllable Instead of punching walls I usually just try deep breathing and cooling off, so Im hoping a Self Defence class will help me control it more.

My main reason for Self Defence is as I live beside a couple of rough areas I would like to be able to handle myself alot incase it was needed.

I'm genuinely a nice person, but everybody has tools that come up to them and wont take the hint and go away.

    Regards,

    Eoin

Sorry didn't really explain myself cleary. I watch it just for the pure aggression of some of the fighters which I find interesting as It doesn't look like they have lost their temper, but with the hits some of them take it suprises me.
