Stuck Keo Pedal

Trying to swap out the keo pedals on my bike, the left came off easily enough, but the right is stuck tight. Am turning it clockwise, have used penetrating spray and as much as force as I can until I'm afraid of scratching frame and damaging tools. I don't have a stand or vice or a spare set of hands. Anyone got any techniques for this?

Well first and foremost check, check and check again that you're turning the right way! (Don't mean to insult your intelligence, but it's a mistake I've made on more than one occassion!). Right pedal unscrews anticlockwise, it is the left that is reverse threaded.

    Try soaking in wd40 overnight.

Hit the end of the spanner with a hammer (sounds ridiculous but it works).

I think James has solved it.

Ah well then try the wd40+hammer. The shock from the hammer can be enough to jolt it loose, same logic behind those pneumatic wheel nut tightener jobs they use in garages.

Tried that, still nothing, tried standing on wrench. I'll soak it again over night and try again in the morning. Thanks.

Somebody told me to use, back off, when thinking about which side. Still doesn't work for me.

I had a similar difficulty before removing a BB from a frame. I was lucky in that I happened to have a four foot bar that conveniently fit over the handle of the wrench I was using. The additional leverage made a massive difference.

i'll just bring it to a shop at the weekend if I can't get it sorted. I have a tendency to bring things in these situations.

Still have a problem remembering which way to view it so as to know which way is ant- and clockwise.

Both pedals tighten in the same direction as the bike's wheels rotate when going forward. To loosen, turn them backwards. Of course, that means the crank can spin backwards so you have to lock it somehow.

One thing to try is to tighten the pedal a bit more before loosening it. That might free up siezed threads.

If it's that badly stuck the threads must not have been greased when it was installed. Whenever you do get it off remember to liberally grease the threads of the new pedals so that you don't find yourself in this situation again!

I remember it by thinking that the Right pedal unscrews the "right" way (normal direction to unscrew something) and the Left pedal goes the "wrong" way (clockwise).

Something I find useful to this end is to turn the bike upside down. This way you are pressing down on the wrench attached to the pedal you are removing and on the other crank.
Not sure if this is the same for right and left hand thread.

I had the same problem, leave it soaked WD40 for 24/48 hours, keep spraying on a bit to keep the rag dripping with it, and maybe have a go every 12 hours, if you loosen a little bit it'll let the WD40 get in a bit further. Repeat 12 hours later till done! Also when finished, clean out the WD40 and apply lithium grease to stop it from getting stuck in future.
