I logged into my Gmail Account there today and got a warning message telling me my accoucn thad been accesed by someone in china, it told me the IP address of the hacker, i done a WhoIs IP search and it tell me a phone number, and email address for the company that supplied the internet service and also a phone number and address of a person (not sure if its the person or not) but i was totally shocked at the amount of info avalable.

Anyways what do you guys reccomend? should i contact the email address and complain to the company about the hacking or should i just change my password and let be, its dam annoying!!! I get mail daily from other people telling me about different medicine + electronic sites ect ect that i know they didnt send, any advice???

P.S. mods if you feel this is the wrong place for this please move

In a nutshell there's not a lot you can do. With IP spoofing and open proxies there is no way to easily know who actually accessed your email - the IP address was (most likely) just automatically logged. It doesn't actually mean that it was the correct originating IP.

For that reason, the ISP won't care or do anything about this even if you do complain.

Just change your password to be STRONG. Also: remember now that everything in your compromised email is now also compromised. (Think: emails in the sent items / trash etc.)

Also, if you use the same password for your email and any other account (anywhere), you need to change those too now.

na it came up just above where the tabs are (delete/archive/move to...ect) it came up in a red banner, you clicked it and it opened a box with the last ten log in's what IP address it was what time, and what country. it disappeared when you clicked it.

Basically Gmail will show any user a warning when they detect suspicious behaviour on their account, ie being accessed from china.

This doesn't mean their account has been 'hacked' per se. It's more than likely someone who knows the OP and has managed to guess their password, and using a proxy located in china for example. Or the OPs machine has been compromised and someone has gained access to the account that way.

@OP: Virus scan your pc, and make sure it's clean, then change your passwords. If you do it the other way around it's possible your changed password will be compromised before you remove any suspicious software on your pc.

If you scroll down to the bottom of your gmail account on the third last row from the bottom you will see "Last account activity" and the last IP address your account was accessed from. If you click on the "details" link there you can see the last 10 IP addresses that accessed your account.

It's worth keeping an eye there to make sure you can account for all the listed IP addresses if you aren't convinced that your account is secure now.
