Internet Compulsion, addiction or dependance?

    Hai!

This has been on my mind alot recently. Would anyone here classify them selves as any of the above?

I am pretty sure what I do would be called a compulsion, I can be away from the computer...but I don't like to be, even if it bores the crap out of me. I still like to use it, as my "happy place" so to speak.

I started using when I was 16, now nearly 21 and I really hate being away from it.

So, poll up in one minute, anyone in the same or similar boat?

Does anyone think these things don't exist?

Have you heard of our fantastic new offer, 3 for the price of 4 when you kiss the waiter?

Which do you have? 36 votes

    I'm thinkin compulsion.

I can go an entire day or two (or a whole 3 weeks holiday etc) without "needing" to go online, but if I'm close to a computer I'm onto boards, facebook etc before I even realise it. I'm more of a "let's see what I missed" type of user, rather than "OMG OMG OMG what am I missing right now???"

All that said, I spend way too much time online. Not even profitably anymore (I used to make a few quid playing poker, now I just browse mental bubble gum).

Your kink is not my kink. Basically a live and let live attitude.
    ...What...?

    I can't only put in 2 questions. I needed a third! :D

I'd fall into that category as well . . .but I kind of go through phases, I might not go on at all for a few days and then use it loads for another few days . . .

I spend 10-12 hours a day online so I would be a very heavy user, but I don't even miss it when I'm away. I work on a website, play games and download all my tv and films from the internet. When I am online I usually check boards and a few blogs, but I wouldn't bother trawling through old post to see what I missed.

The only thing that is important to me is email. The rest I couldn't care less about. Which makes me wonder why I give them so much of my time

Well I do use the internet to study so it is a dependance.

However, I have fallen into that trap of checking my inbox over 10 times in 5 minutes now and again :o

The internet is a great tool and a welcome distraction for the most part. It's like a double edged sword though because for all it's advantages it's addictive nature isn't advantageous. Sustained use for long periods is denting concentration and memory levels.
So in summary I use it more than I need to but I'm trying to cut down.

I work in IT so I have a computer in front of me 9-5:30 Mon-Fri. Obviously being in IT I am always extremely busy and in no way just spend my days on boards and ordering crap I don't need online.

I also would check facebook on my iPhone every hour or so. Post up a few tasteless status updates about my bowel movements and see if anyone I actually like is online for a chat.

But if I am out and about after work or on weekends it doesn't bother me to be away. I will read through a thread here if it looks like it could be entertaining but other than that i'll only jump in on a thread that's still on it's first few pages. I don't need to read every AH post ever just to feel normal.... then again I never really feel normal.

Would you use a donkey to get around? No you use a car.

It's the same reason people use the internet.. It's simply better than writing letters. Faster, more efficient.

Save an excel document and leave it on a shared drive.. Or write it out 15 times and post a copy to everyone..

Keep up or get out of the way!
