Bumbles Lloyd says 'that this IPL has been going on since 1998 and that he'd rather watch Barcelona v Inter Milan than Chennai Chunderers v Delhi Dipsticks'......;)

Difficult to argue with that except a billion Indians would disagree and I would rather watch the IPL everyday of the week and twice on Sunday than watch Chelsea beat Stoke 7-0 or indeed the English Premier League that runs over a year featuring 20 teams of which only two have any realistic chance of winning!:(

To each his own I suppose!:)

I'm not bothered about watching soccer either, but the IPL has never caught my attention, and I don't think it's likely to either. As you say, to each his own.

Lloyd's expressing his own opinion - no problem at all with that (certainly doesn't make him an eejit, whatever else you might think about him). I personally agree 100% with him.

It's the Indian Premier League and therefore possibly more attractive for the billion Indians. I tried very hard to like this years IPL, the coverage on ITV 4, and the team I chose to follows abject failure didn't help but it is WAY too hyped and more style than substance.

I don't think I will bother watching next year, I will stick to the English 20/20 domestic season and probably watch the team I follow crash and burn in abject failure!!!

I think most English cricket fans would probably agree with Bumble and I think that is probably who he was aiming his comments at.

Perhaps he was pissed off that he wasn't invited to commentate on the IPL and its cheerleaders and therefore decided to rubbish it on twitter;).....wont be surprised if he like so many others before him changes his tune when he does get invited in the future

For me personally the IPL has been a revelation and getting better each year despite all the controversy surrounding it (thankfully that fraud Modi has been fired) and it wont be long before the ECB despite its earth shattering statement that it wants to preserve the sanctity of the English game changes its match scheduling to allow English players/teams to participate in the IPL / Champions league

Or perhaps he genuinely does not like it, has no wish to commentate on it, and was posting a genuine opinion of the tournament?

For me personally, the IPL is a monumental non-event - simply a circus of cricket, an excellent money-making machine that is irrelevant - for me!

Everyone has different views - you think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, I couldn't care less if it didn't happen again.

There's room for both opinions, and all opinions in between too.

I'll remind you of this exchange of views when the Bumbler is there in India next year with his tail between his legs salivating over the IPL

IPL has barely made a ripple in Europe. ITV4 is NOT the networks big hitter, the studio presenters and guests were NOT A list, or B list. 2 or 3 paragraphs in the papers (at best) covering the final, little/no coverage on television news, even ITN whose network covered IPL had little interest in the tournament.

If Lloyd does go to IPL next year, and I wouldn't blame him, he will be doing it for the money, same as everyone else, not for the love of the tournament.

Indians can enjoy the tournament, but in the end, its still an Indian tournament.

Feel free - but you should also accept that not everybody goes gooey at the knees at the thought of the IPL.

....and the knocks just keep on coming!!!

Agree that ITV's coverage of the IPL was abysmal and their studio coverage bordered on the ridiculous but if ITN had little interest in the tournament that hardly caused a ripple in Europe why did they even bother covering it!!....its not like somebody held a gun to their heads

IPL is here to stay whether you like it or not.....I mean who in their right minds would sit and watch the likes of India and Australia hammer the likes of Bangladesh and New Zealand in what for all intents and purposes is not 'TEST' cricket even it parades under that name

Here's my two cents worth.....IPL will revolutionise cricket coverage to such an extent that soon the likes of Sky already having lost the Ashes will bin test cricket coverage completely and concentrate solely on T20's bcos thats where all the money is going to be in the future

So basically, you think Bumble is an idiot because he doesn't love the IPL?

No....basically I think IPL is the best thing to happen to cricket

So why did you open the thread attacking David Lloyd?

I mean liking the IPL is cool.
    I don't agree.
Having watched a number of matches from both IPL and the English domestic T20 over the last couple of years and I preferred the English one.

Except that you also called Bumble an Eejit for expressing his opinion.

Hmmm... so tell me who plays and comments just for the love of the game or for a tournament?? Everyone is there for the money. Just see the ridiculous amount of money paid to the soccer players. But again, its their profession. No one is there in any sports or tournament just for the love of it.

Some like test cricket, some IPL, some county... its just a matter of preference. I enjoy all forms of cricket. Test cricket is right up there but I did enjoy some of the IPL games.

Yeah, I quite like it. It helps if you embrace the ridiculousness of it all, like Vegas or something. Ok, the non-stop sponsorship grates a little, but it's worth it to see some of the best players in the world go at it hammer and tongs for a few hours. I mean, look at the batting lineup of the RCB, or the bowlers in Mumbai Indians. It's incredible.

Of course, you won't get what you can get out of a good test match, but it's supposed to be different. Although even for tests and one dayers i'd always choose to watch cricket from the sub-continent anyway, the Sri Lankans especially, so i'm possibly a bit biased.

Wow, i was on holiday last week and only see this thread and could not stop putting my 2cents also.
I am agreeing and disagreeing on few point of all.
First of all, with David Llyod ---
Yes, He and Nasir Hussain, Michael Athrton would not like IPL becuase they could not see young cricket like Eoin Morgan, KP etc are going to be super rich within couple of years and can live on cricket. They also seen their authority of english cricket domination slipping away very fast.
I have personally nothing against David except he only play handful of test matches and he became guru of cricket commentory, but i also like that fact that i still prefer his commentory over other indian commentators (especially on Harsha Bhogle, Mandy Bedi, L Shivrama and few other useless) but some indian commentators are really good, like Ravi Shastri, Sunil and other non-indians like Wasim Raja, Boycott. so this is on David that i am OKAY with his commentry but understand that he was not given contract this year but i am very positive that he is the future commentator in IPL soon.

On the other hand on his remarks over watching IPL and Inter v Barca, I have to prefer and many others just becuase intensity of the match. But as far as i know, the two matches hardly clashed! IPL is very young anyway and it will grow more with the time but Inter v barcelona had the edge but its not about the match but his personal frustration of IPL, so i would not blame him imagine new players like Morgan earning $1 million next year and not claiming dael in Ireland :-)

On IPL, yes, it is a great tournament and better than English 20-20 session. it aso has the money, attraction, and already $4b brand world wide and let me tell ya, corporation dont spent money for nothing, and there are nike, reebok, adididas and many other putting money in. It is going to be a run for money for other tournament. EPL is alos good and big tournament but i think there is no comparison in both, they both are unique on its own but yes IPL is giving scare to all old thinking/partial x-cricketers (Arjun Raanatunga/Bishen Bedi/Nasir/Michael auth/many others) dont like IPL becuase .......time is changing.....
    People dont like changes!!!

So my conclusion, David is OKAY but can be partial toward english phenomena sometime (as English do for any game, one win and they claim the best of all time is on the rise:_) , Inter V Barca was better option,
    Apology for any typo.
