It's pressure sensitive though, so a quick tap won't turn it on but will turn it off. Try it. It's kinda cool, I guess. But also a bit annoying if you don't know about it.

Was I the only one who didn't know about this?

No I didn't know about it either. But it does explain things, I too thought I had a faulty keyboard. I personally find it rather annoying. Having to go back and tap it again.
